Best-Rated Gas Suppliers QLD
Methodology & Important Notes
Most Satisfied Customers | AGL
AGL has landed the top spot in our Queensland gas supplier ratings for the sixth year in a row, once again beating out Origin. The retailer was awarded five stars for overall satisfaction, along with five stars for its customer service, bill and cost clarity and ease of sign-up.
How we rate QLD natural gas suppliers
We surveyed 295 bill-paying customers across Queensland to find out what they think about their gas supplier against rating factors such as overall satisfaction, value for money, customer service and ease of sign-up. While there are six natural gas suppliers in Queensland, not all qualified for our survey. As such, this report compares two of the most prominent gas retailers in the Sunshine State: AGL and Origin.
How many Australians do we survey for our ratings?
Canstar Blue surveyed 295 Queenslanders with an active mains gas connection for their feedback on their natural gas retailer. Respondents had to live in Queensland, have a gas account and pay the bills for their response to be eligible.
- The outcomes reported in these ratings are measured via ISO 26362 accredited research panels managed by Qualtrics.
What criteria are used to rate QLD natural gas providers?
Respondents rate their satisfaction with their natural gas provider from zero to 10, where zero is extremely dissatisfied and 10 is extremely satisfied. Provider satisfaction was rated by respondents on the following criteria:
- Overall satisfaction: measured consumer satisfaction with a natural gas provider as an individual score NOT a combined total of all criteria.
- Value for money: cost was low for the quality and effectiveness of the natural gas provider.
- Customer service: the natural gas provider had multiple service points for customers, e.g. telephone, email, online chat.
- Bill and cost clarity: the natural gas provider had an easy-to-understand bill.
- Online tools and advice: the natural gas provider had an app or online account to monitor energy usage, pay bills and manage account information.
- Ease of sign-up: the natural gas provider had a simple sign-up process.
How do we determine the winner?
The winning brand is the one that receives the highest overall satisfaction rating once all the scores from the overall satisfaction criteria are combined and averaged.
- Overall satisfaction is asked as a specific question and represents an individual measure, not a combined total of all criteria.
- When we cannot determine a clear winner from the criteria for the overall satisfaction rating, we will then look at the other criteria measured in the rating.
- The brand with the highest number of five-star ratings within the supporting criteria will become the five-star recipient in overall satisfaction, and thus win the award. If a clear leader still cannot be determined from the supporting criteria, joint winners will be declared.
Which natural gas providers do we rate?
Brands must have received at least 30 responses to be included, so not all brands available in the market have been compared in this survey. The brands rated in this survey are listed below in order of best overall satisfaction.

Fees payable by product providers for referrals and sponsorship or promotion may vary between providers, website position, and revenue model. Sponsorship/promotion fees may be higher than referral fees. If a product is sponsored or promoted, it is an ad and it is clearly marked as such. Please note that the Satisfaction Rating displayed in the table is a rating relating to customers’ overall satisfaction with the brand. It should not be confused with an individual product rating. Learn more about Brand Satisfaction ratings and for more information on how the Brand Satisfaction ratings are calculated, read the Canstar Blue Most Satisfied Customers Methodology.
The results do not include all energy retailers or products in the market and may not compare all features relevant to you. Canstar Blue does not supply electricity or gas services. If you decide to apply for a particular energy product, you will deal directly with the retailer, not with Canstar Blue. Fees, charges, product information and contract terms should be confirmed directly with the relevant retailer.
Some plans may require you to meet certain conditions before a discount may become available to you. Check the energy provider’s plan information for details of all possible discounts that may apply and any conditions that need to be met for you to be eligible for these discounts.
Check your current plan’s exit fees and other termination provisions before changing providers.
Some plans may have a minimum term that is longer than one year. In that case the total cost over the term will be much higher than the estimated Price, which is for one year only. Consider the provider’s detailed product and pricing information before making a decision to take out a new plan or switch electricity providers.
Pricing Information
The price shown is inclusive of GST and is the estimated lowest possible price a representative customer would be charged in a year for each plan, assuming all conditions of discounts offered, if any, have been met. Gas usage assumptions have been derived from the average usages advertised by a selection of retailers in the distribution region as shown at the top of the table.
The general usage assumptions for products displayed in the table have been derived from:
- the average usages advertised by a selection of retailers in the distribution region as shown at the top of the table. The figures provided are intended to serve as general estimates and should be used for information only. If the amount of gas you actually use differs greatly from this estimate, your bill could be significantly larger or smaller than the estimated price/year listed for each plan; or
- if you have provided usage data from your gas bill, the estimated annual amount payable for this plan is based on your individual circumstances.
The estimated yearly Price is based on single rate tariffs, which is when a flat usage rate is charged for ‘blocks’ of gas consumed and could be a limited amount per day, month, quarter, which may include a second block with a different usage rate applied, or, season.
Some plans may have a minimum term longer than one year – in that case the total cost over the term will be much higher than the estimated yearly Price (which is only for one year).
Some plans may apply additional charges to the price shown. Always check the energy provider’s plan information for details of all charges that may apply.

How to get a better deal on gas in QLD
If you’re looking for a better deal on gas in Queensland, there are several factors to consider when shopping around. If you’re comparing suppliers and plans, you’ll want to look at the following aspects and inclusions:
- Usage charges: A charge for the amount of gas a household uses each billing period, priced in cents per megajoule (c/MJ).
- Supply charges: The daily ongoing charge for staying connected to the gas network.
- Contract type: Whether you’re on a standing offer or a market offer.
- Discounts: These may be guaranteed, meaning they’ll apply no matter what, or conditional, which require customers to satisfy certain criteria.
- Other fees and charges: This could include late payment fees, billing fees, credit card surcharges or disconnection and exit fees.
Gas suppliers may rely on bill credits and discounts to attract new customers, but these may be hiding higher usage and supply charges. It’s important to look at the total cost of your plan when comparing prices, including standard charges as well as discounts.
Be aware that gas prices are subject to change, meaning the only way to find the cheapest plan for you is to compare rates on a regular basis. You also don’t need to bundle gas and electricity from one provider to find the best deal – mixing and matching retailers may prove cheaper, depending on your usage needs.
FAQs about QLD natural gas providers
How many natural gas providers operate in QLD?
The QLD gas market is not as competitive as other states, but that’s not to say there aren’t good deals out there. If our customer ratings are any indicator, it’s worth keeping your eyes peeled for future offers as other suppliers attempt to chip away at the dominance of AGL and Origin. Here is a list of gas suppliers that currently offer plans in QLD:
- AGL
- Alinta Energy
- CovaU
- GloBird Energy
- Origin Energy
- Red Energy
What are the gas distributors in QLD?
While this report looks at gas retailers or suppliers, a gas distributor is responsible for physically delivering the gas to homes and businesses and owns and maintains pipes, meters and equipment.
There are two main gas distributors in Queensland:
- Allgas Energy is located south of Brisbane River, on the South Coast, in Toowoomba and Oakey.
- Australian Gas Networks is located nationwide, but operates north of the Brisbane River in Queensland.
Knowing which gas distributor services your area means you know who to contact in case of an emergency or outage. Your final gas bill will also vary depending on your distributor, as each distributor charges transmission costs, which are passed on to customers by gas suppliers.
How is gas charged in QLD?
Some Queensland natural gas providers charge a flat usage rate or ‘single rate’, meaning the rate is the same regardless of the time of day or how much gas is used. Other providers may charge a ‘block rate tariff’, which means rates vary depending on how much gas you use.
Generally, customers on a block rate tariff will pay less for each subsequent ‘block’ of gas usage; for example, you may pay 3c/MJ for your first 80 megajoule (MJ) of usage each day, then 2.8c/MJ for the next 50 MJ. Some gas suppliers may also charge for MJ used per quarter or month.
In addition to the above usage rates, gas customers also pay a supply charge, which is a daily ongoing fee to cover the cost of being connected to the gas network. This is charged regardless of how little or how much gas is consumed.
What should I look for when picking a gas provider in QLD?
There are several factors that may influence your decision-making when choosing a gas supplier. We asked Queenslanders in our 2023 survey why they decided to pick their gas provider and plan. This is what we found:
- 32% wanted the same brand as their current electricity provider
- 23% shopped around and compared plans with websites such as Canstar Blue
- 22% prioritised name recognition (i.e. picking a brand they were familiar with)
- 15% were attracted to a big discount
- 8% were attracted to a sign-up incentive, such as Frequent Flyer points
