How we rate digital cameras

Our ratings compare a range of digital camera brands based on customer satisfaction, so you can find out what other Aussies think about their digital camera before you shop around. It’s like asking for recommendations from other Aussies, but all in one place!

Canstar Blue surveyed 499 Australians for their feedback on the digital camera(s) they’ve purchased in the last two years.

  • The outcomes reported in these ratings are measured via accredited research panels managed by Qualtrics.

Survey respondents are asked to rate their satisfaction with their digital camera brand from zero to 10, with zero meaning extremely dissatisfied and 10 meaning extremely satisfied. Digital camera brand satisfaction is rated on the following criteria:

  • Overall satisfaction: measures consumer satisfaction with a digital camera brand as an individual score, NOT the combined total of all criteria.
  • Picture/video quality: photos and/or videos taken on the camera were of good quality.
  • Customisation: there were a range of customisation features that were easy to use and effective.
  • Value for money: the price paid was reasonable compared to the quality of the digital camera.
  • Design: the digital camera was functional and easy to use, looked good and was convenient to transport.
  • User friendliness: the digital camera was easy to set up and operate.

The winning brand is the one that receives the highest Overall satisfaction rating once all the scores from the Overall satisfaction criteria are combined and averaged.

  • Overall satisfaction is asked as a specific question and represents an individual measure, not a combined total of all criteria.
  • When we cannot determine a clear winner from the criteria for the Overall satisfaction rating, we will then look at the other criteria measured in the rating.
    • The brand with the highest number of five-star ratings within the supporting criteria will become the five-star recipient in overall satisfaction, and thus win the award. If a clear leader still cannot be determined from the supporting criteria, joint winners will be declared.

To qualify in the ratings results, brands must have received a minimum of 30 responses to be included. Therefore, not all digital camera brands in the market will be compared in this survey. Brands rated in this survey are listed below in order of best overall satisfaction.

  • Nikon
  • Panasonic
  • Sony
  • Canon
  • Kodak
  • Fujifilm

Top Digital Camera Brand — Nikon

Nikon was our winner for best digital cameras, with five stars scored across all categories: overall satisfaction, picture/video quality, customisation, value for money, design and user friendliness.

Panasonic was our runner up with four stars across all categories including overall satisfaction, followed by Sony which also scored four stars for overall satisfaction and in all other categories. Canon, Kodak and Fujifilm rounded out our ratings, with each brand scoring three stars for overall satisfaction.

While these are only some of the digital camera brands on the market, there are plenty of other brands to choose from, offering a range of features at different price points. Comparing a wide range of camera brands might help you choose the best digital camera for your needs.

Over half of those surveyed had researched/compared digital camera camera brands and models before purchasing, while 26% wish they had purchased a better camera. The average price paid for a digital camera was $615, and while 38% had purchased their camera on sale, 19% chose to purchase the cheapest digital camera available.

Frequently Asked Questions

Canstar Blue surveyed more than 3,000 Australian adults across a range of categories to measure and track customer satisfaction, via ISO 26362 accredited research panels managed by Qualtrics. The outcomes reported are the results from customers within the survey group who have purchased a new digital camera in the last three years – in this case, 499 people.

Brands must have received at least 30 responses to be included. Results are comparative and it should be noted that brands receiving three stars have still achieved a satisfaction measure of at least six out of 10. Not all brands available in the market have been compared in this survey. The ratings table is first sorted by star ratings and then by mean overall satisfaction. A rated brand may receive a ‘N/A’ (Not Applicable) rating if it does not receive the minimum number of responses for that criteria.
