Disney+ may have only launched in late 2019, but it’s already one of Australia’s favourite and most popular streaming services. Where else can you watch all your favourite Disney content – new and old – in one place? If you’re thinking of jumping on the bandwagon (or maybe you’re just desperate for a Star Wars or Marvel binge) but are unsure about the costs, this one’s for you. Read on as Canstar Blue unpacks everything you need to know about how much a Disney+ subscription costs.
How much does Disney+ cost in Australia?
Disney+ costs AUD $13.99 per month if you want to keep things flexible, or $139.99 a year if you’re happy to commit to a 12-month subscription (which saves you 16% on annual costs, or nearly two months’ worth). Disney announced a price increase in late 2020 from $8.99 per month/$89.99 annually to their current prices due to the introduction of Star, with another price rise in December 2022, but even with the price increase, Disney+ is still competitively priced amongst its main competitors.
Does Disney+ have a free trial?
Not any more. Disney+ previously offered a seven-day free trial when you first signed up. However, this was removed in June 2020, meaning you’ll have to start paying from the off.
Monthly Vs. Annual Disney+ subscription: Which is better?
There are pros and cons to getting either a monthly or annual subscription for Disney+. If you choose to sign up on the monthly subscription, you won’t have to worry about lock-in contracts. You’ll simply be charged $13.99 per month and have the luxury of cancelling your plan at any time (we suggest at the end of the month to get your money’s worth) without any cancellation fee. A monthly subscription could be a great option for anyone who only wants to sign up to watch a particular show, or those who aren’t comfortable with the upfront yearly cost.
If you choose to sign up for the annual subscription, you’ll have your account for 12 months, meaning you don’t have to worry about paying your bill every month. While the annual subscription of $139.99 is a much larger upfront cost, it may be worth it if you’re looking to get the best value out of your subscription and you expect to stick around for the long haul anyway. If you sign up for an annual subscription, you will save yourself 16% in the long run, with the $13.99 monthly cost adding up to $167.88 over the 12 months.
How does the cost of Disney+ compare to other streaming services?
From a monthly cost, Disney+ is now arguably in the middle of the price scope, with a few services more expensive, while others are available for cheaper. However, Disney+ also has the distinct advantage of its yearly subscription, which does drop down the average monthly cost, in addition to offering HD streaming across all subscriptions, whereas you’d have to pay more for the increased quality if you were watching Netflix or Stan. What payment options does Disney+ offer?
Selecting how you pay for Disney+ is done during the sign-up process, with Disney+ accepting payments through your debit or credit card, or via PayPal, and can be set to be a recurring payment, meaning you don’t have to keep manually paying the bill every month. You can update your billing information via the settings if you need to change or cancel your subscription.
Is Disney+ worth the money?
When it comes to bingeing, we really are spoiled for choice now, whether it’s a sports marathon with Kayo, originals on Netflix, Aussie shows on Stan, or childhood classics from Disney+, meaning which you sign up to is just as much about the available content as it is the price. With Disney+ consolidating all Disney brands and creations onto the one streaming app, if you do have a craving for classics such as 101 Dalmatians, modern masterpieces such as Tangled, or other content like National Geographic, there’s only one place to get your fill. And for only $13.99 a month, it will certainly tempt plenty to take a trip down memory lane.
