Design and display

Samsung is more or less sticking to its iconic overall design for the Galaxy S series, although has made some small tweaks for its 2024 range. This year, Samsung has slimmed the bezels on the Galaxy S line, giving you slightly more screen size, and the edges of the S24 range are less curved. However, buyers will get the same rear-left vertical camera house you’ll see on the S23.

The base S24 features a 6.2-inch full HD+ display, a minor increase from the 6.1 inches found in previous models. The bright screen comes with adaptive refresh rates from 1-120Hz, so your display will automatically adjust to offer the smoothest experience based on how you’re using your device. Samsung is also promising better outdoor visibility thanks to its Vision Booster tech, and the S24 features a peak brightness of 2,600 nits — that’s brighter than both the iPhone 15 Pro Max and the Google Pixel 8 Pro.

Performance

Samsung is going all-in on performance in 2024, with a gaming and multi-tasking ready Exynos 2400 processor powering the S24 and S24+. While this isn’t as strong as the Snapdragon processor included in the S24 Ultra, the Exynos is built and developed by Samsung, and should offer a fast and responsive experience, especially when combined with the Galaxy’s AI enhancements.

Artificial intelligence is one of the biggest selling points of the S24 range, and Samsung has integrated its own Galaxy AI across each device’s camera system and built-in apps. Some of the most useful applications of Galaxy AI on the S24, S24+, and S24 Ultra include:

  • Live Translate: Real-time, two-way voice and text translations for phone calls within Samsung’s Phone app
  • Interpreter: Instant translations of live conversations, with a split-screen view so both parties can follow along, even without an internet connection
  • Chat Assist: Suggestions for context-appropriate communication, from emails to social media posts
  • Note Assist and Transcript Assist: AI-generated summaries, transcriptions and translations of articles, notes and recordings
  • Circle to Search: The option to search for details in photos or media by simply long pressing the home button and circling or tapping the object or item you’re interested in, without having to leave the app you’re currently using

Cameras

Samsung’s Galaxy AI works in tandem with the S24’s excellent camera lineup, which includes a 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera, a 10-megapixel telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom, and a 50-megapixel main camera in back, along with the 12-megapixel front camera.

This is the same camera setup featured on last year’s S23 and S23+, but the leap forward in software and AI will open up to new possibilities for buyers: faster and clearer video and photo processing, a better low-light performance, and automatic editing suggestions to help you get the most from your images.

Battery and extras

Of course, these features won’t get you far without a capable battery, and the standard S24 has been given a slight upgrade over last year’s S23. The phone comes with a battery capacity of 4,000mAh (up from 3,900mAh in 2023), and is compatible with 25W wired and 15W wireless charging.

All of the S24 range runs on Android 14, with Samsung’s own One U1 6.1 interface. Users have a variety of personalisation options, including using Samsung’s Galaxy Modes to set and follow daily routines for work, sleep, exercises and more. If privacy is a concern, the Galaxy S24 series is again protected by Samsung’s Knox platform, which offers end-to-end security and data encryption.

Rounding up the S24’s key features, you’ll get IP68 water and dust resistance, along with 5G connectivity. The base Galaxy S24 comes with 8GB of RAM and is available in 256GB and 512GB storage sizes. Available colours include Onyx Black, Marble Grey, Cobalt Violet and Amber Yellow, with the Samsung store also offering Sapphire Blue, Jade Green and Sandstone Orange.

If you love the inclusions of the Galaxy S24, but have your eye on a bigger screen and heftier battery, the S24+ has you covered. Opt for the S24+, and you’ll get a big, bright 6.7-inch quad HD+ display, offering vibrant colours, excellent visibility in direct sunlight, and an adaptive 1-120Hz refresh rate.

Cameras

The S24+ includes the same triple camera system in the back as the standard S24, with a high-resolution 50-megapixel main wide camera, a 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera, and a 10-megapixel telephoto camera. The S24, S24+ and S24 Ultra come with a wide selection of modes and features, including Portrait, Night Mode, Expert RAW Mode, and Astro Hyperlapse. In front, you’ll find Samsung’s 12-megapixel selfie cam with dual pixel technology, for more accurate results in low light.

Performance

The S24’s photo editing options are enhanced by Galaxy AI, and the S24+ includes all of the innovative AI features listed higher on this page. The device also comes with the same Exynos 2400 chipset as the S24, for an efficient performance across gaming, photography, streaming and more.

Battery and extras

Along with a larger screen, the Galaxy S24+ features a bigger battery than the standard S24. The device includes a big 4,900mAh battery, and is compatible with 45W wired charging, allowing you to recharge by up to 65% in just 30 minutes. All of this year’s Galaxy phones are also capable of sharing power via Samsung’s Wireless PowerShare.

Design and display

If you want a premium phone with serious cameras, a powerhouse processor, and all-day battery, look no further than the Galaxy S24 Ultra. This year’s Ultra is the first Galaxy device to feature a titanium frame, which offers increased strength and durability without adding to the phone’s weight.

The S24 Ultra comes with a 6.8-inch quad HD+ display, with Samsung’s Vision Boost tech, a peak brightness of 2,600 nits, and the same 1-120Hz refresh rate as the S24 and S24+. The Ultra’s screen is also protected by Corning Gorilla Armor glass, giving you a little extra insurance against scratches and chips, and the whole device is IP68 certified against water and dust.

Performance

Unlike the smaller S24 and S24+, the Ultra packs a powerful Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, and comes with an increased focus on mobile gaming. The S24 Ultra’s vapour chamber is 1.9 times larger than the chamber in the S23 Ultra, so your device will stay cool even during heavy-duty gaming or multi-tasking. The Ultra also introduces ray tracing to its mobile gaming graphics, delivering much more life-like lighting, reflections and shadows.

Cameras

Another stand-out Ultra feature is the device’s quad rear camera package, which offers serious zoom and magnification options. The Ultra comes with a big 200-megapixel main camera, a 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera, a 50-megapixel telephoto camera, and a 10-megapixel telephoto camera. This system offers optical-quality zoom up to 10x, thanks to Samsung’s Adaptive Pixel Sensor, and enhanced digital zoom up to 100x.

The Galaxy S24 Ultra comes with upgraded night photography, with 60% bigger pixels when compared to the S23 Ultra. You’ll also get cleaner and more stable video capture, with better noise reduction and less blur even at night. The Ultra also includes the new ProVisual Engine, so you’ll get a range of Galaxy AI elements designed to simplify image editing.

Battery and extras

Ultra buyers can enjoy long-lasting battery and fast, wireless recharges, thanks to the phone’s 5,000mAh capacity and 45W charging compatibility. The Ultra also packs in 5G connectivity, Android 14 with One UI 6.1, Samsung Knox security and a host of new Galaxy AI enhancements (such as Live Translate, Chat Assist, and Interpreter). As with previous Ultra handsets, the S24 Ultra is also S-Pen compatible, and comes with Samsung’s signature stylus.

You’ll be able to buy the Galaxy S24 Ultra in 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB storage sizes, each with 12GB of RAM. Samsung is offering the Ultra in Titanium Grey, Titanium Black, Titanium Violet and Titanium Yellow, as well as Titanium Blue, Titanium Green and Titanium Orange via the Samsung online store.
