Optus mobile price rise: Will you pay more?

Fact Checked Fact Checked

Optus customers are the latest group of Aussies to be hit with a price rise, with the telco quietly increasing costs across its range of postpaid mobile plans.

Plans prices have jumped by $3 per month on all of Optus’ postpaid Choice Plus options, with the exception of its $69 Promo plan. This means new and current customers will pay $36 per more year for their mobile plan.

The changes apply to Optus postpaid plans, both for SIM-only/BYO phone customers, and customers on an Optus device payment plan. Existing customers will see their prices change from June 4, 2025, while new customers are subject to the updated pricing now.

Will Optus customers get more for their money?

It’s not all bad news for Optus users: while prices are higher, each standard plan’s monthly full-speed data allowance has also increased. Below is a comparison of Optus’ old and current Choice plan range.

Plan Old price & features New price & features
Small Optus Choice Plus Plan
  • $52 per month
  • 50GB fast data
  • $55 per month
  • 70GB fast data
Medium Optus Choice Plus Plan
  • $62 per month
  • 180GB fast data
  • $65 per month
  • 200GB fast data
Large Optus Choice Plus Plan
  • $82 per month
  • 360GB fast data
  • $85 per month
  • 400GB fast data
 Optus Promo Plan
  • $79 per month ($69 per month for 12 months)
  • 360GB fast data
  • $79 per month ($69 per month for 12 months)
  • 360GB fast data

Existing customers on Optus’ three standard Choice plans will now get an extra 20GB or 40GB of fast data to use each month, in addition to unlimited speed-capped data (limited to speeds of 1.5 megabits per second). So on a data-for-dollars basis, you’re now paying between $0.20 – $0.80 per gigabyte, down from $0.22 – $1.04 per gigabyte.

All plans continue to include unlimited national talk and text to standard numbers, plus unlimited standard international talk and text on the Medium, Large and Promo plans. Optus’ plans also feature 5G network access, eSIM compatibility and streaming discounts via Optus’ SubHub platform.

How do Optus’ phone plans compare?

If you’re concerned about the ongoing cost of your Optus mobile plan, you have options. If you’re on a SIM-only plan (meaning you’re using a phone you own), you’re free to cancel your service and swap to another telco at any time. Customers paying off a new phone with Optus can pay out their remaining device balance and leave, or stick it out until the end of their payment term (either 12, 24 or 36 months).

Optus provides wholesale network services to around a dozen smaller telcos, so you can still access its 4G and 5G network with another provider. Popular telcos offering Optus coverage include Amaysim, Moose Mobile, Southern Phone, Yomojo, Dodo and SpinTel.

Compared to Optus pricing, customers can significantly cut their phone bill by moving to one of these challenger telcos. For example, Southern Phone offers a hefty 80GB of data for $34 per month (although data is capped at speeds of 100Mbps). This gives you 10GB more data than Optus’ Small plan, for $21 less each month.

If you’re a bigger data user, you can score 200GB for $50 per month with SpinTel, or 220GB for $55.80 each month with Moose Mobile. This will save you around $10 – $15 per month when compared to Optus, or up to $180 per year.

Ultimately, there’s still benefits to sticking with Optus, including streaming add-ons, cheaper access to Optus Sport, and international roaming from $5 per day. However, if you’re looking to compare mobile plans, you can see how other Optus network providers stack up below.

Why are Optus prices rising?

Anthony Shiner, Managing Director of Customer Solutions at Optus, attributed the price change to the telco’s ongoing investment in network and technology upgrades.

“Optus understands that many of our customers are coping with a range of increases in expenses and for customers in need, or who just have questions, our team is here to help,” Mr Shiner said.

“The Optus team is available to support customers and answer any questions. Customers can reach us 24/7 via the My Optus app or by calling 133 937.”
