Motorola unveils a new powerful flip phone — the Razr 50 Ultra

Motorola has unveiled the latest iteration of the iconic Razr series, with the new Motorola Razr 50 Ultra about to hit the Australian market.

This new Ultra flip phone includes some impressive upgrades from its predecessor, the Razr 40 Ultra. With an even bigger cover screen, powerful processor and new AI technology, and a sleek design, the new Razr 50 Ultra will be available from July 17, 2024, with preorders live from July 2 to 16.

The Razr 50 Ultra takes its cues from Motorola’s history of creating fashionable flip phones, said Kurt Bonnici, Head of Motorola Greater Asia Pacific.

“As the pioneer of the flip phone, no one knows more about foldable devices than Motorola. Twenty years ago Motorola changed the way people viewed and used mobile phones – the Razr was the first device to become a fashion accessory, and who can forget the satisfying snap of flipping it shut at the end of a call. Now, two decades later, we are once again challenging the status quo to redefine the smartphone experience for our consumers.” Mr Bonnici said.

The Motorola Razr 50 Ultra builds on the success of the Razr 40 Ultra. The device offers some decent upgrades across the board, including the cover screen size, cameras and battery, all in a sleek and stylish design for $1,699 AUD RRP. While it’s slightly more expensive than the Razr 40 Ultra — and is a similar price to the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 — the upgrades from its predecessor can justify the price increase.

A bigger cover display and more powerful performance

While the Razr 40 Ultra boasted one of the biggest external screens available for a flip phone, the Razr 50 Ultra takes this to the next level with a 4-inch cover display with up to 165Hz refresh rate. Unfolding the phone, you’ll get a big 6.9-inch display, again with up to 165Hz refresh rate.

You’ll get a powerful performance boost and fast-paced gameplay thanks to the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3, making it one of the first flip phones to feature this processor. You’ll also get 5G connectivity along with 12GB of RAM and 512GB of internal storage — a boost from the Razr 40 Ultra’s 8GB RAM and 256GB internal storage.

Battery performance has also been bumped up to a 4,000mAh battery with up to 45W fast charging — up from 3,800mAh battery and up to 30W fast charging found on the Razr 40 Ultra.

Upgraded cameras and AI enhancements

Cameras received another big upgrade, with a dual 50MP main and 50MP telephoto lens setup on the back, while you’ll get a 32MP front-facing camera. However, with the ability to fold your phone, you have more choice for which camera to use for your selfies and portraits.

Like many other phone releases, AI inclusions are also a big feature for the Razr 50 Ultra. While the inclusion of the Google Gemini app — which can be easily accessed from the external screen — will help with simplifying daily tasks like planning trips and creating recipes, other AI features help to enhance the overall experience.

AI camera features such as the photo enhancement engine, super zoom, long exposure and adaptive stabilisation will help to level up your photo taking and video recording game. The inclusion of Moto AI features (which will be included in an update in the coming months), such as Catch Me Up and Remember This, will bring even more productivity and user-focused experiences to your phone.
