Motorola Razr 50 flip phone

Motorola’s newest flip phone offers some big upgrades

Following on from the recent release of the Motorola Razr 50 Ultra and the latest additions to the Edge 50 series, Motorola’s newest flip phone, the Motorola Razr 50, offers a big upgrade to its predecessor, the Razr 40.

The Motorola Razr 50 features a much larger external display than the Razr 40, along with a range of premium features and AI upgrades all in a sleek, beautifully designed device for under $1,200 AUD RRP.

“At Motorola, we are continually adapting to meet changing consumer needs and emerging technologies. The Razr family combines innovation and style in a practical design, redefining the possibilities of smartphones,” Kurt Bonnici, Head of Motorola Greater Asia Pacific said.

“In this latest iteration, we are again challenging the status quo, bringing cutting-edge foldable screen technology to consumers. With the Motorola Razr 50 it’s like having two phones in one. You have the large external display to quickly check and respond to notifications, skip to the next track on Spotify, or pay for items using Google Wallet and if you need to extend your view simply open the handset to get a full 6.9-inch internal display.”

Motorola Razr 50: Features and specs

The Motorola Razr 50 is the latest in Motorola’s Razr lineup, following on from the more premium Razr 50 Ultra and the 2023 Razr 40 range. While its larger cover screen is a noticeable upgrade from the Motorola Razr 40, despite a few downgraded specs, Motorola is also highlighting many of its AI inclusions — such as the Google Gemini app — and personalisation features to set the Razr 50 apart from its predecessor.

While the Razr 50, like the Razr 40, includes a 6.9-inch main display, the external display has been significantly increased. It’s been bumped up from the 1.5 inches of the Razr 40 screen, to 3.6 inches for the Razr 50. You’ll get up to 120Hz refresh rate on the main display and up to 90Hz for the cover display, which is a downgrade from its predecessor.

Motorola has also improved the hinge to make it easier to open and close with one hand, while Corning Gorilla Glass Victus helps to keep the external display protected from bumps and scratches.

The new MediaTek Dimensity 7300X processor offers a smooth and powerful performance, which can keep up with all your usage needs and AI tasks. You’ll also get 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage, along with 5G connectivity. It also has IPX8 water resistance, which means it’s able to withstand submersion in up to 1.5 metres of water for up to 30 minutes.

The Razr 50 is also designed to handle long days and nights of usage, thanks to its 4,200mAh battery and up to 30W fast charging, with a 33W fast charger included in the box.

While the cameras have received a bit of a downgrade on paper compared to the Razr 40 (which had a 64-megapixel main and 13-megapixel ultra-wide and macro camera setup), you’ll still get a dual rear-camera setup, with a 50-megapixel main camera with optical image stabilisation and a 13-megapixel ultra-wide camera with Macro Vision. You’ll also get a 32-megapixel front-facing camera with Quad Pixel technology for sharper and brighter images in a range of conditions, even with low lighting. Motorola has also packed in a range of features such as adaptive stabilisation and horizon lock to improve your videos.

The Motorola Razr 50 is available in three Pantone-curated colours and textured finishes. The Koala Grey option is available in a vegan suede finish, while the Beach Sand and Spritz Orange options are available in a vegan leather finish.
