What features does the Google Pixel 8a include?
Design and display
The Pixel 8a comes with a bright 6.1-inch OLED Actua display, which Google claims is 40% brighter than the screen on 2023’s Pixel 7a. You’ll also get a fast 120Hz refresh rate, ideal for seamless scrolling through social media and smooth gaming.
The phone is designed with rounded edges, an aluminium frame and an easy-to-hold matte body. As with the 7a, the 8a also includes IP67 certified dust and water protection.
Performance and battery
Google has included the same powerful, specialty-crafted Tensor G3 chip found in its Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. This is Google’s fastest and most capable chip to date, designed for multitasking and also to support the bevy of AI features included in the 8 series.
Pixel 8a users will have access to a full range of smart AI and Google Assistant features, including:
- Circle to Search: Search directly from photos, text or video by drawing a circle.
- Live Translate: Use your camera to instantly translate text, plus translate messages and live audio.
- Pixel Call Assist: Includes call screening, clear calling and the option to let Pixel wait on hold for you.
- Gemini: Google’s built-in AI assistant is also coming to Pixel 8a, a first for a Pixel at this price point.
The 8a also includes Google’s Titan M2 security chip and a built-in VPN. You’ll get Android 14 out of the box, plus seven years of software support and security updates.
Google is promising 24-hour plus battery life, thanks to the Pixel’s 4,400mAh battery. The 8a is Qi wireless charging certified and also includes Extreme Battery Saver, for up to 72 hours between charges.
Cameras
This year’s Pixel offers a dual rear camera setup, along with a 13-megapixel front-facing camera. The device includes a 64-megapixel main rear camera, plus a 13-megapixel ultra-wide lens and plenty of AI and software enhancements. Some of the main camera features include:
- Super Res Zoom: Zoom in up to 8x.
- Magic Eraser: Delete objects or even background sounds in photos and videos.
- Magic Editor: Easy one-tap editing, such as resizing or repositioning objects and people.
- Best Take: Combine multiple shots for perfect group photos.
- Photo/Face Unblur: Sharpen blurry faces or objects in photos.
Google has also thrown in a series of camera modes, including panorama, astrophotography and portrait mode.
