Telstra SIM-only postpaid plans
Telstra — Australia’s largest telco — offers a full suite of mobile phone plans. If you’re looking for a new phone on a plan, Telstra offers a wide range of mobile phones from brands like Apple, Samsung, Google and more. In addition to a phone on a plan, Telstra also offers a range of SIM-only phone plans — both as prepaid and postpaid plans.
When people are referring to SIM-only plans, they are often thinking of postpaid plans, and Telstra refers to its range of postpaid plans as SIM-only plans. If you want to find out more about Telstra’s SIM-only prepaid plans, you can check out our Telstra prepaid plan guide to find out more and compare plans.
Telstra offers three month-to-month SIM-only plans and while they are technically ‘postpaid’ plans with a monthly bill, you’ll pay in advance at the start of each month. Recurring monthly payments can be made via AutoPay, so you’ll no longer have to keep on top of your bill’s due date.
Telstra SIM-only plans include access to the Telstra 4G and 5G networks and all plans include uncapped speeds.
If you want to buy a phone on a plan, Telstra’s SIM-only plans are the same plans that you’ll have to choose from to bundle with your new phone.
What’s included in Telstra SIM-only plans?
All three Telstra SIM-only plans include unlimited talk and text to standard Australian numbers, unlimited standard international SMS and MMS. You’ll also have unlimited standard international SMS and up to 30 minutes of international calls included on all plans.
Plans include monthly fast data inclusions and also feature unlimited speed-capped data as a back-up. This means that once you’ve used up your allotted monthly full-speed gigabytes, you’ll be able to continue using your data but capped at 1.5Mbps speeds for the remainder of your billing cycle. Once a new month begins, your plan resets, and it’s back to full data speeds once more — with no excess data charges or bill shock.
Telstra’s postpaid plans are also month-to-month, you’ll be able to switch between the plans each month if your usage needs change, or cancel your plan altogether without any early termination fees (although you may need to pay a final bill).
In addition to the standard inclusions, if you have a Telstra SIM-only plan, you’ll also have access to Telstra’s rewards program, Telstra Plus. You’ll earn points simply for paying your bill and have access to benefits such as discounted sports and movie tickets, concert pre-sales and more. Points can be used in the rewards store to buy from a wide range of items such as headphones, smartphones, tablets, gaming consoles and more.
Should you sign up to a Telstra SIM-only plan?
With only a small range of plans to choose from, Telstra’s SIM-only mobile plans might not be the best fit for every user. While the big data inclusions and extras might be ideal for some, if you’re looking for a cheap SIM-only plan, you may want to compare a range of plans from other providers. As Telstra is Australia’s largest network, prices on its plans tend to reflect this premium status.
Smaller providers with lower overheads tend to offer more data for less money. On a price basis alone, Telstra seems quite expensive especially in the competitive world of SIM-only plans. However, this price might be well worth paying for, to be on Australia’s largest network with some extra perks.
