Should I buy an iPhone outright or on a plan?
If you’re unsure about whether cheaper to buy an iPhone outright or on a plan, keep in mind that the telcos that offer iPhones on plans (usually Telstra, Optus and Vodafone), generally don’t charge more for the device itself. Deciding to buy an iPhone on a plan or outright may come down to whether you’re willing to be locked into your device payments (over 12, 24 or 36 months) or if you can afford to pay the big price tag upfront.
Buy an iPhone outright is usually considered cheaper because all you are paying for is the overall device price. When you buy a phone on a plan, you’ll pay for the device but you’ll also be forced to bundle a postpaid phone plan with your phone. Often, these phone plan costs from Telstra, Optus and Vodafone can be quite expensive compared to the cheaper SIM-only phone plans available from smaller providers.
