What is the cheapest Telstra phone plan?
Whether you’re looking for a SIM-only plan or a plan bundled with a phone, Telstra offers prepaid and postpaid phone plans with different inclusions and price points. However the cheapest Telstra mobile plan is typically more expensive than what is on offer from other providers.
But there could be good reasons as to why you’d look to Telstra for a phone plan, especially if you’re living in a regional or remote area, as the Telstra network is the largest in Australia. Smaller providers, known as Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs) operating on the Telstra network won’t typically have access to the full network, so in some circumstances, a phone plan with Telstra might be the only option.
If you prefer postpaid, the cheapest Telstra phone plan is $65 per month with 50GB of full-speed data on a month-to-month plan. Once you use all your high-speed data, you’ll be able to access unlimited backup data at the capped speed of 1.5Mbps. You’ll also get access to some international call and SMS inclusions. Telstra’s postpaid phone plans all include unlimited standard national calls and SMS. This plan includes access to the Telstra 5G network with uncapped speeds.
This plan can also be bundled with any phone payment plan, with your choice of the devices including the latest Samsung Galaxy S range and the latest Apple iPhone series, along with phones from other manufacturers such as Google and Motorola.
As for prepaid plans, while the $13 plan with 3GB of data is technically the cheapest Telstra mobile plan, it runs on a seven-day expiry. If you want a longer term option, the $39 plan includes 15GB of data on a 28-day expiry. This plan, and the other 28-day prepaid plans include unlimited standard national calls and SMS, plus continuous data rollover of up to 200GB when you recharge before expiry.
How does the cheapest Telstra mobile plan compare to Optus and Vodafone?
While Telstra is the largest telco in Australia, both Optus and Vodafone are hot on its heels when it comes to mobile network coverage. However, despite this competition, the cheap Telstra mobile plans mentioned above, are more expensive than what Optus and Vodafone offer.
Optus’ cheapest postpaid plan is around $13 cheaper than Telstra, while its cheapest prepaid plan is around $4 cheaper. As for Vodafone, it’s typically the cheapest of the big three telcos, with its cheapest postpaid plan around $16 cheaper per month than Telstra, while its cheapest prepaid plans is around $4 cheaper than Telstra, but the same price as Optus.

Cheapest prepaid and postpaid phone plans from other telcos
As Telstra phone plans are rather expensive, if you’re on a budget, you might need to look elsewhere. There are plenty of cheaper phone plans out there from smaller telcos including Moose Mobile, Everyday Mobile, Boost Mobile, Southern Phone and Amaysim. Typically the cheapest plans can be found somewhere around the $10 to $20 per month range, and you can generally find some decent data inclusions in that $20 to $40 per month price range.
Here is a selection of postpaid plans from Canstar Blue’s database for $40 or less, listed in order of standard cost, lowest to highest, then by data allowance, largest to smallest. Are cheap Telstra mobile plans right for me?
Deciding whether Telstra’s cheap phone plans are right for you does of course depend on what your needs are. If you already have plans and services with Telstra, it could be worth looking into any discounts you might receive for bundling services as an existing customer. Telstra also offers extras like rewards and entertainment add-ons, so keep this in mind if these are perks you know you’ll use.
However, if you have a really tight budget for your phone plan, it’s worth comparing options from a range of providers before deciding. Keep in mind that some cheap plans might not include unlimited calls, will typically have smaller data inclusions, and in the case of prepaid, could be on a short expiry period.
If you’re a moderate phone user, you might need a plan with around 10GB of data, whereas if you do a lot of video streaming, you’ll need a bit more data. Telstra’s inclusion of unlimited capped-speed data is also a huge plus, as many of the smaller telcos will generally charge excess data charges for any use over your monthly data allowance or require you to recharge your plan.
When you’re comparing phone plans, even the cheapest Telstra mobile plans, consider what your needs are and what your budget is before you decide. You can use our free phone plan comparison tool to help you compare plans from a range of providers across data allowances and price.
