How to speed test TPG internet

What can impact my TPG speed test?

Your TPG internet speed test may not give you a complete picture of how your internet plan is performing. The results could be impacted by a range of factors, such as your internet type, whether you’re using a VPN, the time of day that you’re testing your internet, if you’re using an old modem and more.

What do my TPG speed test results mean?

Once you run the speed test for your TPG internet plan, you’ll see several different results. The speed test will show the results of your download speeds, upload speeds and ‘ping’.

Download speeds are perhaps the most important result, as this determines how well your plan will perform tasks such as streaming video, playing online games and other general usage like browsing the web and social media.

Upload speeds might be important to you if you work from home, as it’s needed for activities like video calls, uploading large files and uploading content to social media.

Ping (and latency) might also be a key result if you do a lot of online activities that require quick reaction times. This is because it measures the time it takes (in milliseconds) between performing a task and when it reaches its destination. That’s why a good ping is essential for activities like online gaming, as a ping with a low number is going to reflect a quicker response time in your game.

Understanding your TPG speed test results can help you to determine whether your plan is performing as it should. Depending on the internet plan type you have (NBN, home wireless, etc.) and the expected speeds that TPG lists for your plan, you should compare your speed test results against what you should be getting. This can help you ensure you’re getting the speeds you pay for. If your TPG internet speed test results are slower than what you should be getting, there could be a problem with your TPG internet plan.

TPG NBN speeds

When you run your TPG NBN speed test, you’ll need to know what TPG NBN plan you’re on. This will let you know which speed tier you’ve signed up for, and therefore the NBN speeds you should be getting on your TPG plan. Here are the NBN speed tiers offered by TPG:

• NBN 12: 12Mbps download speeds, 1Mbps upload speeds
• NBN 25: 25Mbps download speeds, 5Mbps upload speeds
• NBN 50: 50Mbps download speeds, 20Mbps upload speeds
• NBN 100/20: 100Mbps download speeds, 20Mbps upload speeds
• NBN 250: 250Mbps download speeds, 25Mbps upload speeds
• NBN 1000: 1000Mbps download speeds, 50Mbps upload speeds

Once you know your speed tier and you’ve run your TPG speed test, you’ll need to check to see if the results are similar to the speeds listed above. However, plans may not always reach the maximum potential speed, especially on the fastest speed tier, NBN 1000. While the fastest speed tier is technically capable of reaching 1000Mbps/1Gbps download speeds, plans from most providers typically won’t reach those speeds.

During the busy evening peak between 7pm and 11pm, network congestion can typically slow down your NBN speeds. That’s why NBN providers are required to list a typical evening speed alongside NBN plans, to give you an idea of the speeds you can expect on your plan during the busy evening period.

This is why it’s also important to run a TPG internet speed test at different times of the day. While your plan may not reach maximum potential speeds during the evening peak, you might find it reaches, or comes close to reaching, expected speeds during less busy times.

TPG NBN typical evening speeds

TPG, like other NBN providers, is required to list the expected typical evening speeds for its NBN plans. Keep in mind that these speeds can change every few months or so. Here are the typical evening speeds you can expect on TPG’s NBN plans:

• NBN 12: 12Mbps download speeds, 0.8Mbps upload speeds
• NBN 25: 25Mbps download speeds, 4Mbps upload speeds
• NBN 50: 50Mbps download speeds, 17Mbps upload speeds
• NBN 100/20: 100Mbps download speeds, 17Mbps upload speeds
• NBN 250: 250Mbps download speeds, 21Mbps upload speeds
• NBN 1000: 800Mbps download speeds, 40Mbps upload speeds

When you run your TPG NBN speed test during the busy evening peak, it’s a good sign if the speeds you’re getting are similar to the typical evening speeds listed with your plan. However, if your plan isn’t anywhere near reaching the typical evening speed, you might need to troubleshoot your slow internet speeds.

Other TPG internet speeds

Alongside its NBN plans, TPG offers a wide range of different internet plans, including home wireless, along with plans on its own fibre network for FTTB connections. As these internet plans use a range of different technology types, speeds for these plans will vary.

TPG’s home wireless plans are available as both 4G and 5G plans. The 4G home wireless plan has typical evening speeds listed as 15Mbps download and 2Mbps upload speeds. 5G home broadband plans are only available with speed caps, with the maximum potential speeds of the cheapest plan reaching 50Mbps and the more expensive plan has 100Mbps. However, both plans list 15Mbps upload speeds. Keep in mind that speeds for these plans may vary.
