TPG, Vodafone and iiNet increasing NBN prices

Fact Checked Fact Checked

TPG, Vodafone and iiNet NBN customers will soon be hit with a bigger broadband bill, thanks to new price increases from parent company TPG Telecom.

From March 26, monthly prices on selected plans will jump as much as $9 per month, adding up to $108 per year to customers’ bills. The changes will apply both to new customers signing up to TPG, Vodafone or iiNet, as well as existing customers being moved across from older legacy plans.

According to the ACCC, TPG and its subsidiary brands currently claim 20% of the NBN market share, accounting for around 1.7 million services. The company is Australia’s second-largest NBN provider behind Telstra.

Why are TPG’s NBN prices increasing?

A TPG Telecom spokesperson told Canstar Blue that while most customers will pay more, existing customers on older plans may benefit from the changes.

“Due to a number of factors, including changes in wholesale pricing from NBN Co, most customers will see an increase in their monthly costs, with some customers paying less per month.

“By moving customers off legacy plans and onto in-market plans, some customers will benefit from the latest plan offerings. Consolidating plans also allows us to simplify services, reduce confusion and deliver streamlined plans that are easier to manage.

“Customers on impacted plans will be contacted and provided with a clear comparison of their new plan and previous plan.”

The last significant NBN price changes occurred after NBN Co’s December 2023 wholesale price revisions, which led to increases in NBN 50 costs, but a reduction in prices for very high speed services.

How you can save on your NBN plan

If you’re currently on a Vodafone, TPG or iiNet NBN plan and looking to cut costs, now’s the time to shop around. Most plans from these three providers are now contract-free, so you can switch to a different telco without incurring early exit fees.

The exception is if your plan includes a ‘zero dollar’ modem, which is only free if you stay connected for a minimum period (usually 24 months). If this applies, you may need to pay out the remaining modem balance to exit your contract.

Once you’re free to compare, you can find significantly cheaper offers across most NBN speed tiers, including NBN 50. Currently, the cheapest NBN 50 plans on Canstar Blue’s database begin at $69.90 per month as standard, with discounted introductory prices also available.

The competitive nature of the NBN market means there’s plenty of new-customer incentives available. Just make sure you’re aware of the standard monthly cost before you jump on board.
