How to speed test Telstra internet

Running a Telstra internet speed test is easy. With the above speed test tool, simply click the ‘Go’ button and let the speed test do the rest.

This is the same speed test tool that can be used to test speeds from all providers and internet types. So not only can you run a Telstra NBN speed test, but you can also test speeds for a wider range of plans and providers, as it’s about testing how your internet connection is working on your device.

What can impact my Telstra speed test?

There are few things that can impact your internet speed, so the results from your Telstra internet speed test may not be totally accurate. These may include:

  • Using a VPN
  • The distance from your WiFi modem and the device you’re testing your speed with
  • Using your WiFi network with your device, rather than plugging your device into the modem with an ethernet cable (if possible)
  • Old equipment, such as an old modem
  • Testing during a busy time or when multiple people and devices are online in your home

What do my Telstra speed test results mean?

The speed test for your Telstra internet plan will show results for the download and upload speeds, along with the ping. Most people will find that download speeds are the most important result as it’s what we use for most online activities such as streaming videos, browsing the web, playing online games and more. Upload speeds are more important for things like making video calls, uploading large files and posting to social media.

Ping (and latency) is the time it takes (measured in milliseconds) between you performing an action and when it reaches its destination, which is especially useful for online gaming where quick response times are essential — a low ping number means good responsiveness.

However the key to understanding your Telstra speed test results is whether these speeds match what internet plan you’re on.

Telstra offers a wide range of internet plans including NBN and home wireless, with different speeds across the plan range. Ideally you want your speed test results to be similar to what speeds you’re paying for on your plan, or the typical speed listed for your plan. Speeds that are slower than your plan’s expected speeds could indicate a problem with your Telstra internet plan.

Telstra NBN speeds

Before you do a Telstra NBN speed test, it’s important to know what Telstra NBN plan you’re on and therefore, which speeds you should be getting on your plan. Telstra offers the following NBN speed tiers for its NBN plans:

  • NBN 25: 25 Mbps download speeds, 5 Mbps upload speeds
  • NBN 50: 50 Mbps download speeds, 20 Mbps upload speeds
  • NBN 100/20: 100 Mbps download speeds, 20 Mbps upload speeds
  • NBN 250: 250 Mbps download speeds, 25Mbps upload speeds
  • NBN 1000: 1000 Mbps download speeds, 50 Mbps upload speeds

When you run your Telstra speed test, your plan should meet similar speeds to those listed above. One exception are NBN 1000 plans, which — although technically capable of reaching 1000Mbps/1Gbps download speeds — don’t typically reach that top speed across the providers which offer it.

However, plans may not always reach the maximum potential speed listed. Network congestion, especially during the busy evening peak between 7pm and 11pm, can impact your NBN speeds, which is why providers are required to list the typical evening speed you can expect on your plan.

It’s also important to run your Telstra NBN speed test at different times of the day. While you might get slower speeds during the evening peak, your plan’s speeds might improve in off-peak times like during the day. If you’re concerned about not getting the speeds that you pay for, running your Telstra speed test at different times and on different devices if possible can help to determine if your plan is performing as it should. If it isn’t, there may be a problem with your plan, connection or device.

Telstra NBN typical evening speeds

Telstra lists the typical evening speeds for its NBN plans, however these speeds can fluctuate. Here are the typical evening speeds you can currently expect on Telstra NBN plans:

  • NBN 25: 25Mbps download speeds, 4Mbps upload speeds
  • NBN 50: 50Mbps download speeds, 17Mbps upload speeds
  • NBN 100: 100Mbps download speeds, 17Mbps upload speeds
  • NBN 250: 250Mbps download speeds, 22Mbps upload speeds
  • NBN 1000: 815Mbps download speeds, 40Mbps upload speeds

If you run a speed test on your Telstra plan during the evening peak, you’ll want to ensure the speeds are similar to the typical evening speed listed with your plan. If your plan is nowhere near achieving those speeds, you may have a problem with slow internet speeds.

Other Telstra internet speeds

In addition to NBN plans, Telstra also offers 5G home wireless, mobile broadband and satellite internet plans (which are powered by Starlink). As these other internet types use different technologies to deliver an internet connection to your home, the expected speeds will vary.

Telstra lists average busy period speeds for its 5G home internet plan in the range of 30 – 590Mbps download speeds and 5 – 80Mbps upload speeds, but these can fluctuate. Keep in mind that speeds for 5G home internet, like mobile broadband plans, will be impacted by a wide range of factors such as mobile network coverage and your proximity to the cellular tower.

Satellite internet speeds can also be impacted by factors such as weather conditions and network congestion. Currently Telstra lists estimated speeds of 50Mbps download and 10Mbps upload, but typical speeds are still yet to be confirmed for this plan.
