How to speed test Optus internet

To run an Optus speed test, all you need to do is click the ‘Go’ button on the speed test tool above. Once you’ve done that, simply wait for your speed test results to come through.

The free speed test tool on this page can be used to test more than just Optus internet speeds. It can be used to test all types of internet from different providers, so you don’t need to run a specific speed test to see how your plan is performing.

What can impact my Optus speed test?

Your speed test results might not give your the whole picture of how your Optus internet plan is performing. Several things can impact your speed test: using a VPN, your internet type, the time of day you’re testing and even out-dated equipment, such as an old modem.

What do my Optus speed test results mean?

After you’ve run your Optus internet speed test, you’ll see three different results listed — download speeds, upload speeds and ‘ping’. Each of these results will tell you something different about your internet speeds and, depending on how you use your home internet, will let you know how well your plan is performing.

Download speeds are perhaps the most important result for many of us. This result shows how fast your plan can perform tasks such as video streaming, downloading files such as games, browsing the web and playing online games.

Upload speeds may be important to you if you work from home a lot. A good upload speed is used for video calls, along with uploading large files such as uploading content to social media.

The other result you’ll see is for ping (and latency), which is an important result if you rely on a fast reaction time, such as in online multiplayer gaming. Ping measures the time it takes (in milliseconds) between performing a task and when it reaches its destination. The lower the number, the better the ping — and quicker the response time.

Once you understand your Optus speed test results, comparing the results against your Optus internet plan — while considering your internet type (NBN, home wireless, etc) — can help you get a clearer picture of whether you’re actually getting the speeds you’re paying for. If your speed test for your Optus internet plan isn’t anywhere close to meeting the speeds your plan should be capable of achieving, you could have a problem.

Optus NBN speeds

Before you run an Optus NBN speed test, you’ll need to know which NBN plan/speed tier you’re on. Optus offers a wide range of speed tiers; however if you choose the Family Entertainer plan, you won’t have the option to sign up to an NBN 25 speed tier. Here are the NBN speed tiers offered by Optus:

• NBN 25: 25Mbps download speeds, 10Mbps upload speeds
• NBN 50: 50Mbps download speeds, 20Mbps upload speeds
• NBN 100/20: 100Mbps download speeds, 20Mbps upload speeds
• NBN 250: 250Mbps download speeds, 25Mbps upload speeds
• NBN 1000: 1000Mbps download speeds, 50Mbps upload speeds

When you know what speed tier you’re on, you can then compare it to your Optus NBN speed test results. Your speed test results should be similar to the maximum speeds listed for your speed tier: however, NBN plans don’t always achieve those maximum speeds, especially on NBN 1000. While NBN 1000 plans are capable of reaching 1000Mbps/1Gbps download speeds, plans from most providers typically don’t reach this maximum speed.

You might also find that your Optus speed test results during the busy evening peak between 7pm and 11pm aren’t as fast as speeds during the day. For this reason, NBN providers are required to list a typical evening speed alongside NBN plans, so customers can see what speeds they can expect during the busy period when networks are congested. It’s a good idea to run your Optus internet speed test during different times of the day, so you have a clearer picture of how your plan is performing.

Optus NBN typical evening speeds

Like other NBN providers, Optus lists its typical evening speeds alongside its range of NBN plans. Keep in mind that typical evening speeds can change every few months or so. Here are the typical evening speeds you can currently expect from Optus’ NBN plans:

• NBN 25: 25Mbps download speeds, 8Mbps upload speeds
• NBN 50: 50Mbps download speeds, 18Mbps upload speeds
• NBN 100/20: 100Mbps download speeds, 18Mbps upload speeds
• NBN 250: 245Mbps download speeds, 22Mbps upload speeds
• NBN 1000: 780Mbps download speeds, 40Mbps upload speeds

When you run your Optus speed test during the busy evening period, you’ll want to make sure that your speeds are matching up to those listed above. However, if your speed test results are nowhere near these speeds, you may have a problem with slow internet speeds. You should then troubleshoot your plan or get in touch with your provider.

Other Optus internet speeds

In addition to NBN, Optus offers a wide range of internet plans including both 4G and 5G home wireless broadband and mobile broadband. As these plans use the Optus mobile network to deliver internet services, you can expect different speeds to those available on NBN.

Optus’ 4G home internet uses the Optus 4G mobile network to deliver internet to your home. Optus lists a maximum of 25Mbps download and 8Mbps upload speeds, however typical speeds may vary. Its 5G plans are faster, and while you can choose between two speed-capped plans with maximum download speeds of 50Mbps or 100Mbps, opting for the uncapped speed plan will see typical download speeds around 200Mbps or faster.

Keep in mind that 4G and 5G speeds using a mobile network will vary greatly due to a range of factors, such as your home’s location and proximity to the cellular tower, network congestion and more.
