Refer-a-friend deals on NBN plans

Fact Checked Fact Checked

Key points

  • A refer-a-friend deal is a discount, credit or other bonus a customer may receive for referring someone to their NBN provider.
  • These deals usually require a new customer to use a special code or URL at the time of sign-up.
  • Refer-a-friend offers can make your plan temporarily cheaper, but make sure to compare all NBN plans available before making a decision.

The NBN space has grown increasingly more competitive, with some telcos offering generous incentives to get new customers on board. One offer you may have come across is the ‘refer a friend’ deal, which gives you a potential discount when a friend or family member signs up with your current provider.

In this article, Canstar Blue explores which NBN providers are offering refer-a-friend deals.

How do refer-a-friend NBN deals work?

If your NBN provider offers a refer-a-friend deal, sometimes called a referral bonus, you can claim a reward for any friends you refer who go on to purchase an NBN plan or other eligible product.  Some providers need your friend to use a special URL or code when signing up for an NBN plan, while others will require your friend to mention your name and account number at the checkout.

Generally, these offers involve a reward for both you and your newly-referred friend, so each customer receives a similar discount or bonus. If everything is in order and you and your friend follow the right referral steps, you could see a credit on your account, or a discount applied to your bill.

Some providers cap the number of friends you can refer, while others give you an unlimited amount of referrals. The referral incentives offered by NBN providers vary widely, but you’ll find what deals are on offer below.

Are refer-a-friend deals worth it?

If your NBN provider offers a refer-a-friend incentive — and you’re happy to stick with the service — referring a friend can earn you a nice credit, discount or bonus. However, unless you’ve got a long list of eager buddies you can later refer, picking an NBN plan solely for the referral opportunity probably isn’t a great idea — it’s a nice bonus, but not something you should prioritise.

Make sure to look at monthly standard pricing, along with the plan performance, speed and data when comparing NBN options. You can use Canstar Blue’s free internet comparison tool to browse a huge selection of NBN plans from a wide range of providers.
