Exetel speed test
How to speed test Exetel internet
It’s easy to run an Exetel speed test — using the speed test tool above, click ‘Go’ and then wait for your internet speed test results to come through.
Not only does the above tool work as an Exetel internet speed test tool, but it’s the same free speed test tool that’s used to test a wide range of internet providers and types. So, no matter your internet plan, you can still test your speeds.
What can impact your Exetel speed test?
While the results from your speed test should give you an idea of how your Exetel internet plan is performing, these results might be impacted by a range of factors. These include if you’re using an old modem, if you’re using a VPN, your internet connection type or the time of day that you’re testing your speeds.
What do my Exetel speed test results mean?
Your Exetel speed test will show you three different results — download speeds, upload speeds and ping. Depending on how you and your household use the internet, you might find some of these results more important than others.
Download speeds are the main number that most plans are measured by, as it’s essential for online activities such as browsing social media and the web, streaming videos and music, and online gaming — especially when downloading large game files or updates.
Upload speed, which relates to information you’re sending out, is especially important if you work from home regularly or make a lot of video calls, along with uploading large files to cloud storage or social media.
The other result, ping — which is related to latency — is the time it takes, measured in milliseconds, between when you perform an action and when it reaches a destination. Therefore, a lower ping will mean that you’re experiencing a shorter response time. This is especially useful for activities like online gaming, which needs a quick response for smooth gameplay.

Exetel NBN speeds
When you run an Exetel NBN speed test, it’s a good idea to know which speed tier your plan is on so you have something to compare your speed test results to. Exetel offers a wide range of NBN speed tiers and is one of a small number of providers to offer the NBN 100 plan with both 20Mbps and 40Mbps upload speeds. These are the maximum potential speeds available from Exetel:
- NBN 25: 25Mbps download speeds, 10Mbps upload speeds
- NBN 50: 50Mbps download speeds, 20Mbps upload speeds
- NBN 100/20: 100Mbps download speeds, 20Mbps upload speeds
- NBN 100/40: 100Mbps download speeds, 40Mbps upload speeds
- NBN 250: 250Mbps download speeds, 25Mbps upload speeds
Once you have your speed test results, you should see similar numbers to those listed above. However, your plan won’t always reach these maximum potential speeds, such as the fastest speed tier NBN 1000, which typically won’t reach the 1000Mbps/1Gbps maximum download speeds.
While plans are technically capable of reaching these maximum potential speeds, factors such as network congestion may affect your plan’s speeds. This tends to be the case during the busy evening peak, which is why NBN providers are required to list a plan’s typical evening speed. This measures the performance of a provider’s speed tier during the evening peak between 7pm and 11pm.
You might find that running your Exetel speed test during the evening peak shows slower speeds than if you run a test during the day. It’s a good idea to run your speed test during different times of the day to get a clearer picture of how your Exetel NBN plan is performing and if you’re getting the speeds you’re paying for.
