TPG vs Telstra NBN plans and prices
Telstra and TPG are two of the biggest NBN providers on the market. Telstra has the largest NBN market share, followed by the TPG Telecom group, which includes TPG, iiNet and Vodafone.
TPG offers a wide range of NBN plans across almost all speed tiers, including NBN 12 — which isn’t offered by many NBN providers — and up to NBN 1000 speeds. The only speed missing is the NBN 100/40 speed tier, with the NBN 100/20 speed tier on offer instead.
When you choose your speed tier, you’ll then get the option to either BYO modem or add a modem on to your plan. If you add a modem to your plan, you can pay for your modem upfront, or sign up for six months and get the modem for $0 (delivery fee still applies). TPG also offers the option to add on home phone call packs to your plan if you add on a modem.
Telstra offers a smaller range of speed tiers, starting at NBN 25 and going up to NBN 1000, and like TPG, offers the NBN 100/20 plan and not the NBN 100/40 plan. All plans also include a Telstra modem for $0 if you stay connected for 24 months; however, if you cancel before then, you’ll need to return the modem or pay a modem non-return fee. All plans also include a basic home phone package by default.
Telstra NBN vs TPG NBN cheapest plans
The cheapest NBN plan from Telstra and TPG will be the plan on the slowest speed tier offered by each provider. For TPG, that’s the NBN 12 plan, while for Telstra, it’s the NBN 25 plan. While TPG’s plan prices are rather average compared to other providers, it’s much cheaper than Telstra’s plans, which are typically some of the most expensive plans on the market.
TPG vs Telstra NBN speeds
Both TPG and Telstra offer a wide range of NBN speeds to suit different household needs. However, TPG is one of a small number of providers to still offer the slowest NBN speed tier, NBN 12, which is great for anyone looking for a basic speed tier for light internet usage.
When it comes to real-world speed performance, both providers list the typical evening speeds for their plans. This can give you an idea of how the plans are expected to perform during the peak evening period between 7pm and 11pm. You can check out our guide on typical evening speeds to find out more about TPG and Telstra NBN speeds.
TPG vs Telstra bundles and extras
TPG keeps its NBN plans fairly straightforward and doesn’t offer any bundles or extras on plans, beyond the option to add a modem and home phone package.
Telstra, however, has a wide range of entertainment add-ons and extras available. In addition to including a modem and home phone pack on all NBN plans by default, Telstra also offers the option to add on a range of entertainment extras to your plan. You can add on streaming subscriptions such as BINGE, Disney+, Foxtel Now, Spotify and Kayo, along with Fetch and gaming consoles from PlayStation, Nintendo and Xbox.
Keep in mind that Telstra only allows you the option to bundle these services onto your Telstra plan, so you’ll still need to pay for your subscription or pay off the console add-on.
Telstra also offers its own rewards program, Telstra Plus, to eligible customers, where you accrue points by paying your bills. Points can be used in the rewards store on items like speakers, smartphones, tablets and more. Telstra Plus customers can also pick up discounts on sport and movie tickets and gain pre-sale access to concerts.

TPG vs Telstra: Which NBN provider should you sign up to?
Deciding whether TPG or Telstra is the right NBN provider for you may come down to something as simple as cost or extras. While TPG has the cheaper prices, Telstra offers more than just NBN plans. However, while entertainment add-ons can be enticing, you’ll need to consider whether you’ll actually use these extras and whether it’s worth the more expensive plan and add-on costs.
Keep in mind that there are many different NBN plans and providers out there, so it’s worth comparing a wide range of plans and providers to find the best NBN plan for your needs.
