How to speed test Aussie Broadband internet

It’s simple to run an Aussie Broadband speed test. Using the speed test tool above, click the ‘Go’ button and wait for the speed test to show you your results.

This is the same free speed test tool that can be used to measure all internet types from all providers. So not only can you run a speed test for Aussie Broadband internet, but you can also use it to test speeds on plans from other providers to see how your plan is performing.

What can impact my Aussie Broadband speed test?

Your Aussie Broadband internet speed test results can be affected by a few things, so your test results may not be totally accurate. If you’re using a VPN, have an old modem, the time of day you’re testing your speed and even the type of internet you have, can all impact your speed test results.

What do my Aussie Broadband speed test results mean?

Running a speed test for Aussie Broadband internet will bring up a few different results. It will show your results for download speeds, upload speeds and ping. Depending on what you primarily use your internet for, you might find some results are more important than others.

Download speeds are perhaps the most useful result for the majority of people. Many online activities like streaming video, browsing the web and social media, as well as online gaming, will rely on download speeds.

Upload speeds tend to be a more important result if you regularly upload content to social media, or if you work from home and make a lot of video calls and upload large files.

Your speed test will also show you a result for your ping. Ping (and latency) is the time that it takes (measured in milliseconds) between performing an action and when that information reaches its destination, so a good ping result will be a low number indicating a quicker time. A good ping result is important for online gaming which requires short response times for smooth gameplay.

Once you’ve received the results from your Aussie Broadband speed test, understanding these results — and comparing to the expected speeds listed with your internet plan — can help you determine if your plan is performing as it should. Your speed test results should be similar or close to the expected speeds listed with your internet plan, otherwise significantly slower speeds could indicate a problem with your Aussie Broadband internet plan.

Aussie Broadband NBN speeds

Before you run an Aussie Broadband NBN speed test, you’ll need to know which Aussie Broadband NBN plan you’re on, as this will let you know which speeds your plan is capable of. Aussie Broadband also offers a wide range of speed tiers, including some of its own tailored speed plans beyond the standard six main speed tiers.

Here are the NBN plans and speeds on offer from Aussie Broadband:

  • NBN 12: 12Mbps download speeds, 1Mbps upload speeds
  • NBN 25/10*: 25Mbps download speeds, 10Mbps upload speeds
  • NBN 50: 50Mbps download speeds, 20Mbps upload speeds
  • NBN 75*: 75Mbps download speeds, 20Mbps upload speeds

* Indicates Aussie Broadband’s own speed plans

When you run your Aussie Broadband internet speed test, your results should reach similar speeds to those listed above. However, plans won’t always reach that maximum potential speed, especially on the faster speed tiers like NBN 1000, where plans from most providers don’t often reach the 1000Mbps/1Gbps download speed.

While plans are technically capable of reaching the maximum potential speeds, network congestion can impact your plan’s speeds. This is why NBN providers are required to list a typical evening speed for NBN plans, measuring the speed performance during the busy evening peak time between 7pm and 11pm.

If you’re concerned about your NBN speeds, or you simply want to ensure you’re getting the speeds that you’re paying for, you should run your Aussie Broadband speed test during different times of the day. You might find that your plan reaches or is close to reaching the maximum speed during the day, but slows down a bit during the evening peak.

When you run your Aussie Broadband speed test during the busy evening peak, you’ll want to ensure your plans are reaching close to the above listed speeds. If your speeds are way off achieving those speeds, you might have a problem with slow internet speeds that you may need to troubleshoot.

Other Aussie Broadband internet speeds

In addition to NBN plans, Aussie Broadband also offers plans using the Opticomm fibre network (an NBN alternative) along with mobile broadband plans using the Optus mobile network. Speeds for these other internet plans will vary.

Aussie Broadband’s Opticomm plans are similar to its range of NBN plans in terms of speeds offered, however expected speeds may fluctuate. Its range of mobile broadband plans use the Optus 4G and 5G mobile networks, so you may find that speeds on this plan are dependent on a range of factors such as network coverage and proximity to the cellular tower. The two cheapest plans have capped speeds up to 150Mbps, however the two more expensive plans have uncapped speeds.
