Internet guides and resources

Use Canstar Blue’s internet guides and articles to help you understand your NBN and broadband connection, troubleshoot your speeds and performance, and find a better internet plan and deal for your home and family.

National Broadband Network (NBN)

NBN plans are now the most widely-used broadband type in Australia. The best value NBN plan for you depends on factors such as your household size, how you use the internet, and your budget.

Customers can choose between seven NBN speed tiers, including:

The faster the tier, the higher the price, so to find the best plan you’ll need to figure out which NBN speed is right for you.

Home Wireless

Home wireless broadband is a popular alternative to NBN, and uses a plug-in modem to connect multiple devices to the internet wirelessly. This type of broadband uses the same 3G, 4G and 5G networks that connect your phone to the internet, and can be a good replacement for NBN or ADSL depending on where you live and the network coverage available.

Mobile Broadband

Mobile broadband uses the same mobile 3G, 4G and 5G networks as home wireless broadband, but is designed to be portable and isn’t a great replacement for your home internet connection. You can connect via a SIM card, USB dongle, or WiFi hotspot, making it a portable internet option that’s good for travel, or as an NBN backup.

How to choose the best internet plan for you

Find the right speed

The best broadband speed for you will depend on how you use the internet at home, as well as the number of people in your household.

Set a budget

The best plan is the right mix of price and features, but knowing how much you’re willing to spend can help narrow down your options.

Compare plans

Use Canstar Blue’s free NBN comparison tool to compare hundreds of NBN plans and find the right deal.

Choosing an internet provider and plan doesn’t have to be complicated. But with hundreds of plans from close to 200 providers available, it can be hard to narrow down the best choice for your home.

Canstar Blue recommends the following steps when picking the perfect internet provider.

1. Which internet providers are available at my address?

Knowing the type of connection offered at your home can help guide you to the best internet provider. If your address is NBN-ready and connected to fibre technology, you’ll have a huge number of plans to choose from, but if you’re only eligible for fixed wireless or satellite NBN your choices are more limited. Similarly, you may also have access to non-NBN fibre networks such as Opticomm or Gigacomm. And if 4G or 5G coverage is strong in your area, you may prefer a home wireless plan instead.

2. What are my internet needs?

Working out how you use your home internet will help you work out how much data you will need and most importantly, speed. Light users may be better suited to lower download speeds, but if you’re a heavy streamer, downloader or gamer – or have multiple people in your home online at the same time – you’ll probably want something faster, with speeds of 50Mbps or higher. You may also want to consider the upload speed if you’re working from home, video calling or sharing large files.

Most NBN and fibre plans include unlimited data as standard, but very light users may want to look for cheaper plans with capped data to find a better deal. Home wireless plans may also come with a monthly data limit, but 5G internet is generally unlimited.

3. Does my internet provider offer extras?

While no-frills plans are available, some customers prefer an internet provider that offers extras such as a home phone line, and included modem, or bundling options such as mobile plans or electricity and gas.

Several providers also offer entertainment add-ons like Netflix, Fetch TV or Binge, and free trials may also be available. Bigger names like Telstra and Optus also offer gaming optimisation add-ons, with features such as static IP address and lower latency.

4. Which internet provider meets my budget?

Of course, finding the best internet provider will also depend on what you’re willing to spend each month. Going in with a budget will help you narrow down the best providers and plans, but you should also check for extra fees such as start-up or activation costs, and look out for early termination charges if you opt for a plan with a contract.

5. Compare internet providers and plans

Once you know the kind of internet plan you’re looking for, then it’s worth comparing plans from a range of providers to see what’s available. Don’t be afraid to check out smaller or lesser-known brands alongside the big telcos, as these providers often sell competitive speeds for lower prices.

If you’re looking at NBN plans, at Canstar Blue, our free NBN comparison table compares plans from a range of internet providers, from the big ISPs to some of the popular smaller telcos. You might also want to consider the customer satisfaction ratings of providers to get a general idea of what other Aussies think about their internet provider.

List of Internet Providers in Australia

There are over 190 internet providers in Australia offering a range of services, including NBN plans. If you’re looking for internet providers that offer internet services other than NBN, many of the providers listed below offer a range of different products.

FAQs about internet plans & providers

The best internet plan is the one that’s right for you – and that’s a plan that has the right inclusions (such as speed, data, contract length, and extras such as modems) and a price that suits your needs and budget. Canstar Blue have made a list of the best internet plans available in the market if you’re looking for a good deal to start.

The cheapest NBN plans are offered on the basic NBN 12 speed tier, but cheap mobile broadband and home wireless options are also available. Prices for cheap NBN 12 begin at around $45 per month, but you can find discounts and specials if you shop around.

Switching to a new NBN provider is easy. Once you’ve found a new plan and provider you’d like to switch to, simply sign up for your new service online or over the phone, then cancel your plan with your old provider.

Switching to a new NBN plan is easy. Once you’ve found a plan and provider you’d like to switch to, simply sign up for your new service online or over the phone, then cancel your plan with your old telco.

You may not need a new modem for the NBN, but you do need a modem that’s NBN-ready. Your NBN provider can advise you if your current modem is suitable, or if you’ll need something new.

For standard definition streaming, you’ll want to find an internet plan that has a minimum speed of 3Mbps; for high definition video, 5 to 15Mbps; and for 4K ultra-HD, at least 15Mbps, although 25Mbps is ideal.

Several NBN providers – including Telstra, Optus, MyRepublic and Aussie Broadband – offer plans specialised for online gaming, that include fast download speeds, reduced lag, and direct transit links to platforms such as Steam.

Several providers allow you to bundle mobile and broadband under the same account, or offer discounts for adding multiple services. Telcos such as Vodafone, TPG, Mate, iiNet, Aussie Broadband and SpinTel offer bundling incentives, including cheaper mobile plans or bonus mobile data.

Although the words can be used interchangeably, the ‘internet’ is the system of networks that connect devices worldwide, and allow you to browse websites and share information online. ‘WiFi’ is a wireless signal that connects your device to the internet via a router.

The internet is a worldwide system of networks that connect via servers in order to share and store information such as websites. Broadband is a term used to describe the technology that allows your devices to connect to the internet, and includes fast connection types such as NBN, fibre, cable, 5G and home wireless.

You can switch from ADSL to NBN by informing your provider that you wish to move to an NBN plan, picking a plan and letting your provider switch you over.

If you’re switching to a new provider for NBN, you’ll need to cancel your ADSL plan with your current provider. Your NBN provider will organise a technician to visit your home to set up your connection.

Wired connections, such as NBN and ADSL, may experience some internet downtime as there might be installations or other physical work that needs to be done in your home. If you’re switching NBN providers, you should only experience a small amount of downtime when the switch occurs. However, wireless connections that rely on a mobile network (such as home wireless), shouldn’t experience any outages.

Technically, switching providers is free. However, your current telco might charge you an early exit fee, or you may be required to pay a final bill or any outstanding charges for a modem. Also, your new provider might require you to pay some upfront fees at sign up, such as modem fees and other setup or activation costs.

If you’re unhappy with your internet service, the first step is to get in touch with your provider. Ensure you either have a record of the conversation (if possible) and a reference number.

If the issue hasn’t been resolved after these communications — or you’re unhappy with the response or resolution you receive — your complaint may be escalated by your provider. If the issue is unable to be resolved, you can lodge a complaint with the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman (TIO).

For those that love the detail

This advice is general and has not taken into account your objectives, financial situation or needs. Consider whether this advice is right for you.

Canstar Blue may earn a fee from its Online Partners for referrals from its website tables, and from sponsorship or promotion of certain products. Fees payable by product providers for referrals and sponsorship or promotion may vary between providers, website position, and revenue model. Sponsorship/promotion fees may be higher than referral fees. If a product is sponsored or promoted, it’s an ad and it is clearly marked as such. An ad might appear in different places on our website, such as in comparison tables and articles. Ads may be displayed in a fixed position in a table, regardless of the product's rating, price or other attributes. The location of an ad doesn’t indicate any ranking or rating by Canstar Blue. Payment of fees for ads does not influence Value Rank or Customer Satisfaction Ratings. See How We Get Paid to find out more.

NBN Value Rank & Sort Order

The data in the table is updated within 24 hours of Canstar Blue becoming aware of a change. You can find a description of the initial sort order below the table. You can use the sort buttons at the top of each column to re-order the display. Learn more about our NBN Value Rank Methodology

Please note that the Customer Satisfaction rating displayed in the table is a rating relating to customer overall satisfaction with the brand, and should not be confused with an individual product rating. Learn more about NBN Customer Satisfaction ratings and for more information on how the Customer Satisfaction ratings are calculated, read the Canstar Blue Customer Satisfaction Ratings Methodology.

The ratings shown are only one factor to take into account when considering products. The results do not include all NBN retailers or products in the market, and may not compare all features relevant to you. Canstar Blue does not supply internet services. If you decide to apply for a particular NBN plan, you will deal directly with the NBN retailer, and not with Canstar Blue. Fees, charges, product information and contract terms should be confirmed directly with the relevant NBN retailer. The NBN plans listed are suitable for Fixed Line connections for residential purposes.

NBN Speed Tiers

The speed associated with a speed tier is the typical evening download speed of the plan. These tiers are based on a range of usage scenarios set out by NBN Co. Internet speeds on the NBN network are influenced by factors like access technology, equipment quality, chosen plan, and network design. Speeds may fluctuate during busy periods and depend on the number of users online simultaneously, as well as your NBN access technology. Check with a retailer before purchasing a product to see what speed you will likely receive at your address.

Typical Evening Speed

The typical evening speed of personal household plans can also be known as typical busy period speed. Typical busy period speeds are the download/upload speeds the plan typically delivers between 7pm and 11pm each day (the busy period). The method for measuring and verifying the typical busy period speed may differ between retailers, however all retailers must conform to an ACCC legislated base case. The typical evening speed for each product is displayed in accordance with the product information developed by the retailer. The accuracy of the speed information should be confirmed with the relevant NBN retailer.

When 'TBC' is displayed this means that the provider is currently unable to provide typical evening speed estimates because sufficient data is not yet available.
The ACCC monitors the performance of internet providers. You can read more here. The speeds you experience may be lower than the advertised typical evening speed depending on factors such as your in-home set up and wiring.

Unlimited Data

Where 'unlimited' is used in relation to Data available on a plan it is likely to be subject to a fair use policy. Please confirm any terms of a fair use policy with your selected provider before making a purchase decision.

What does the ‘phone’ mean?
By clicking on the number next to the phone icon, you will leave the Canstar Blue website and be connected with the call centre of the Online Partner’s brand that you have selected. You will be subject to that referral partner's brand privacy policy and terms of use. You agree that Canstar Blue Referral Terms apply to this referral.
