Tesla electric vehicle driving on road

Win a free Tesla Model 3 with $2000 credit from OVO Energy

Go green on a new OVO Energy plan and you could drive away in a free Tesla.

OVO will give one lucky new electric vehicle plan customer the keys to a brand-new Tesla Model 3 worth $56,700. The rear wheel drive sedan not only produces zero emissions but even accelerates to 100 km/h in as little as 6.1 seconds. It has a top speed of 201 km/h and maximum range of around 510 km.

Switch to OVO between 1 July 2024 and 31 August 2024 to be automatically entered into the draw. As an added bonus the winner will also receive a $2,000 credit towards their energy plan to help ease cost of living pressures.

Receive an extra entry for referring each new customer who successfully switches to OVO during the competition period. Each person referred through the Refer a Friend Program will be credited a total of $120 over 12 months.

Previous winner Stephanie Micheli switched to OVO in 2022 and was thrilled to receive the surprise phone call, informing her that she had won a Tesla. The prize could not have come at a better time with her expecting a baby and her old car “slowly dying and eating” into her bank account.

OVO’s giveaway is open to residents in New South Wales, Victoria, southeast Queensland (SEQ) and South Australia. For full terms and conditions, please visit OVO Energy’s website or click through on the OVO table below.

OVO’s EV plan offers a discount charging window of 8 cents per kilowatt hour (kWh) between midnight and 6am. Simply plug in an EV overnight and wake up to a full battery in the morning. There is also a 33 cent per kWh solar feed-in tariff and 3% interest reward for keeping the account in credit – watt a deal.

The plan also comes with an optional 100% Greenpower add-on, which allows customers to upgrade to 100% renewable electricity. GreenPower helps energy retailers offset customer power usage through purchasing electricity through accredited renewable generators. The government-managed initiative supports hundreds of renewable generators across Australia including wind farms, solar farms, hydropower (water) plants and biogas (organic matter) plants.

Since all electricity is fed into the same grid, regardless of how it was generated, GreenPower customers do not and cannot receive their electricity straight from a renewable generator unless they generate that power themselves (e.g. through rooftop solar).

Rather, retailers must match GreenPower customers’ electricity usage with buying renewable energy from government-accredited wind, solar, hydro and other renewable generators. This is typically achieved through purchasing Large-scale Generation Certificates (LGCs). Renewable energy is then added to the national electricity grid on the customer’s behalf.

Is an electric vehicle power plan worth it?

Switching to an EV power plan could definitely be worthwhile for some EV owners in Australia, particularly those that do a significant portion of their charging from home.

Canstar Blue Utilities Editor Tara Donnelly said EV power plans can provide financial relief to drivers trying to manage home vehicle recharging costs. The level of relief is heavily dictated on how often a driver uses their charging window or added credits.

“While a portion of the day does offer significantly cheaper usage rates for customers, all other hours are calculated against normal base rates, which sit far higher than the charging window. This means that if customers aren’t or unable to shift their charging time to that of the lower rates, then the potential savings or benefits could essentially be wasted,” Ms Donnelly said.

Customers should consider whether incentives and benefits of an EV plan are best suited to them and their usage before making a final purchase decision.

“If the rewards don’t work well against your usage and charging habits, then it may be worth considering other options to minimise your charging costs,” she said.

OVO Energy is among several other retailers, including AGL and Red Energy, to begin offering EV-suited power plans to households. While some plans favour charging windows, such as OVO Energy has done with The EV Plan, others may lean towards bill credits or free charging days to offset costs for customers.
