You may not realise it, but thanks to something called ‘distribution zones’, you’ll likely be paying different rates for power than households in other parts of NSW. It’ll be more pricey for your mates in Northern NSW to connect to power than your house in Sydney, and that’s because distribution costs account for as much as 50 per cent of your total energy bill.
In NSW, the distribution networks are:
Unfortunately, you can’t change distribution zones without moving house, but knowledge of where the power is cheaper may sway serious savers when choosing their next home.
The cheapest provider in NSW is changing all the time and can vary greatly depending on where you live. In general, it’s rarely the well-known energy companies that come out to be the cheapest in NSW, but once in a while Origin, AGL or EnergyAustralia may run a promotion bringing it close to the cheapest.
In NSW, specifically on the highly populated Ausgrid network, challenger brand ReAmped typically offers the cheapest plan, as it makes its business staying that way. Mojo Power, GloBird Energy and Tango Energy also feature towards the top, as well as carbon-neutral provider Nectr.
When it comes to picking a new power plan, it’s easy to be swayed by headline discounts and sign-up bonuses, but what you ought to be looking at is the plan’s rates. You may be surprised to discover that the big three (Origin, AGL and EnergyAustralia) don’t always have the most competitive rates.
On the Ausgrid network in NSW, the cheapest usage rates are around 20c/kWh, and the cheapest supply rates 80c/day. On average, providers are likely to charge 22-28c/kWh for usage, and 90c/day for supply.
Small providers like ReAmped Energy, Mojo Power and Nectr usually offer the lowest rates. Origin, AGL and EnergyAustralia typically cost about the same, and work out $100 to $200 more expensive per year.
Comparing rates on power plans can be confusing, but we’re here to help. In NSW, rate information can be found either through our comparison tool, a provider’s website, fact sheets, or over the phone. Here’s where to find them on Canstar Blue:
2. Use our sorting tools to narrow down your options
3. Select the ‘More details +’ option that’s under the green ‘Go to site’ button
4. Look under the ‘Charges’ section to see usage and supply rates
5. Check the rates on multiple plans to make sure you’re not paying too much
Keep in mind that your usage rate will usually make up the bulk of your bill, so it’s important that it stays relatively low. However, small or energy-efficient households shouldn’t dismiss the supply charge, as for them it may make up a larger ratio of the bill.
