What is a no lock-in contract electricity plan?

No contract electricity plans allow households and businesses to benefit from the rates offered on a plan for as little or as long as they like. Unlike lock-in contracts, no contract plans don’t have a designated contract term, which means customers are free to switch out of their plan without consequence or additional charges at any time. Typically these types of contracts are offered in conjunction with variable rates, however there are some fixed rate plans that offer no lock-in contracts too.

Which providers offer no contract electricity?

Is going with a no contract electricity plan a good idea?

Whether a no contract electricity plan is right for you will depend entirely on your personal preferences. No contract plans allow customers to be flexible with their plan choices, and make the switching process significantly easier, should a cheaper or better-suited energy deal arise. For households who like to regularly compare deals in the market, this kind of plan could be a good match. But, for those who like a little more certainty from their energy costs and would rather just set and forget, a more rigid, lock-in contract plan could be the way to go.

FAQs about No Contract Electricity Plans

The exit fee for leaving an electricity contract can cost anywhere from $15 to $150, although on average, these costs sit around the $20-$30 mark. While exit fees are slowly becoming a thing of the past, there are still some retailers that may charge this fee when you switch plans. That’s why it is important to check the energy fact sheet of any plan before making a purchase decision, as this will list any charges you may come across throughout the duration of your plan.

A benefit period refers to the period of time in which a discount is applicable for. This is typically used in conjunction with conditional discounts, such as sign-up credits, or if fixed rates are offered on a plan. A benefit period is not to be confused with the contract length, which is the amount of time a plan will be held for. A benefit period can lapse within a contract length so it is important to take note of when any benefit periods may be ending as this could change the costs charged on your bill.

A typical electricity contract will last about 12 months, although you may find there are some providers who will offer a contract over two years. Not all contract plans will come with exit fees or early termination fees though.

While some fixed rate energy plans may also come on a lock-in contract, there is a slight distinction between the two. A lock-in contract typically sees customers charged with an exit fee for breaking out of their plan early, while fixed rate energy plans lock in rates at a certain amount for a period of time. Not all fixed rate plans will necessarily charge customers for leaving early, just as some lock-in contract offers may come with variable rates that could change at any time.
