Amaysim Energy Review and Rates

AMAYSIM ENERGY IS NO LONGER PUBLICLY AVAILABLE.

Amaysim Energy customers should now be with AGL. Details below should be treated as historical information only.

You probably know Amaysim best as a budget mobile phone plan provider, but the once tiny telco has some big plans for the future, including taking over your electricity and gas supply. That’s right, Amaysim is now an energy provider, servicing households across New South Wales, Victoria and South East Queensland. In this review, we look closely at what Amaysim has to offer as an electricity retailer, how its plans shape up, and what you can expect to pay for your power.

It’s worth saying that Amaysim already owns an energy company in the shape of Click Energy, but the two brands will operate separately, with their own products and prices. So, what does Amaysim Energy have to offer? Could you get a better deal with Amaysim? Read on for pricing details, or jump into our comparison tool and compare specific quotes from more than 20 retailers right now (depending on where you live).

Amaysim Energy Plans

Amaysim has built a solid reputation in the telco space on competitive prices and great customer service. Is this what consumers can expect from its new energy plans? Amaysim mixes things up with a few market offers across each state it retails in. Amaysim also offers a dedicated solar plan with a generous feed-in tariff for solar customers. Amaysim promises simple, transparent and convenient energy plans. All products come with no lock-in contracts and monthly billing, with no “confusing” discounts to be found. This is, however, a bit of a change for Amaysim given that it first launched into energy with some of the biggest electricity and gas discounts around at the time.

Amaysim’s standard electricity market offer is simply called “Classic Electricity” or “Post-paid electricity” which seems to reflect the flexible nature of it, given the plan comes with no fixed term agreement or exit fees. Amaysim’s solar-specific offering is called ‘”Post-paid Solar” and its natural gas deal is named, yep you guessed it, “Post-paid Gas’.

Aside from its ‘traditional’ offerings, Amaysim has also now launched a subscription-based product in Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland. With this, customers pick one of three set-price monthly plans based on their specific usage requirements. Read on for further details.

Amaysim Energy Subscription Plans

In addition to its traditional energy plans listed below, Amaysim has also launched a subscription-based product in Victoria, NSW and QLD. With this, customers choose one of three prepay plans based on their specific energy usage requirements. Each plan includes a set amount of energy to be used over the month, at a set price. Should households need to purchase more energy, they can simply buy an add-on. Amaysim says this new approach will remove the dreaded bill shock that can come with traditional electricity plans.

Amaysim Energy Solar

Amaysim Energy is one of few mainstream retailers to offer specific deals for solar customers. These solar plans come with some of the biggest feed-in tariffs on the market, but prospective customers should be sure to check the base rates of their plan before deciding on the potential benefit of the solar rebate. Amaysim is similar to Click Energy in that it offers seemingly generous feed-in rates, but these plans may not be the best move for everyone. It will largely depend on how much power you use and how much you export into the grid. Those with large solar systems may be better off than those with smaller systems given they will be exporting more power, but it all comes down to personal circumstances.

Amaysim Energy’s current feed-in tariff rates for its ‘Post-paid solar’ plans are as follows:

  • VIC: 13c/kWh
  • NSW: 16c/kWh
  • QLD: 10c/kWh

While the feed-in tariff in New South Wales looks particularly generous, keep in mind that the rates you are charged on the solar plan may be higher than the standard electricity plan. That’s why it’s always best to check the usage and supply rates of any plan before signing up.

Should I switch to Amaysim Energy?

Amaysim looks set to be a competitively-priced energy retailer in most areas, but whether or not it is the right match for you comes down to multiple factors. If you also happen to be a mobile phone customer with Amaysim, you may enjoy the convenience of having one service provider to deal with. Or if you’re a solar customer, you may get good value from Amaysim’s feed-in tariffs, provided the deal meets your usage needs and the amount of power you export.

By offering plans with no conditional discounts, Amaysim is moving in the same direction as several major electricity companies, perhaps given recent scrutiny of the energy industry and how big discounts don’t always mean the big savings they suggest. But in the same vein, no discount plans may not be as competitive as they may suggest, even if the retailer promises “great low rates” etc.

Aside from pricing, Amaysim has a strong record as a provider of good customer service, which is especially important in the often confusing world of energy. Amaysim has consistently topped Canstar Blue’s customer satisfaction ratings for SIM-only providers. However, be sure to shop around and compare rates from a number of retailers before jumping in.
