Samsung Galaxy S20, S20+, S20 Ultra

Samsung Galaxy S20, S20+ and S20 Ultra: features, prices and plans

Fact Checked Fact Checked

The first big phone release of 2020 is finally here – and if you’re a Samsung fan, you’re now spoilt for choice with three new high-end models to choose from.

Samsung has officially launched its S20 range, unveiling the standard Galaxy S20, the upgraded Galaxy S20+, and the super-sized premium S20 Ultra. All three devices are available in stores from March 6, 2020.

If you’ve been waiting to get your hands on these must-have, 5G-ready Androids, here’s everything you need to know.

Samsung Galaxy S20

The smallest and most affordable of this year’s Galaxy S series, the S20 offers a similar design to 2019’s flagship Galaxy S10. Despite being the ‘standard’ model in Samsung’s 2020 Galaxy S line-up, the S20 is no slouch in specs or size, featuring a 6.2-inch dynamic AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate for fast, seamless scrolling.

Samsung has included last year’s hole-punch front camera cut-out and in-screen fingerprint sensor, meaning the S20’s Gorilla Glass Infinity-O display makes the most out of the phone’s 6-plus inch size. Buyers will get Android 10 out of the box, as well as an update to Samsung’s specially-adapted OneUI interface.

Once again, Galaxy lovers can expect a next-level camera line-up, with a 10-megapixel front-facing shooter and three lenses in back. Samsung has revamped the rear camera design for the S20 range, shifting to lens set-up the top left of the screen in a domino-shaped rectangular alignment.

The S20 includes a 12-megapixel wide-angle rear camera, a 64-megapixel telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom and up to 30x Super Resolution Zoom, and a 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera. This package is ideal for brighter, clearer low-light and Night Mode photos, and you’ll also get 8K video – the highest resolution currently available on a smartphone.

The S20 is powered by an Octa-Core processor, and includes 8GB or 12GB of RAM and 128GB storage, with up to 1TB of expandable storage via microSD. You’ll also get water and dust resistance, but Samsung has finally eliminated the 3.5mm headphone jack – a move that’s sure to be controversial.

Although it’s early days for 5G in Australia, the S20 will be available in a 5G-capable variant, as well as a standard 4G model. Whichever network you’re using, you’ll get reliable all-day use with a 4,000mAh battery with 25W wireless charging and Power Share compatibility for device-to-device charging.

Other features of note include Samsung Knox security and Face Recognition, Bixby intelligent assistance, Dolby Atmos surround sound, and eSIM functionality.

Samsung Galaxy S20+

The bigger brother to the S20, the S20+ comes with all the features of the standard model – just in a larger package. You’ll get a 6.7-inch Dynamic AMOLED screen, either 128GB or 512GB of storage (plus 1TB of expandable memory via the microSD card slot), and up to 12GB of RAM, along with a 64-bit Octa-Core processor. The S20+ is also IP68 dust and water resistant, uses the new OneUI 2.0 interface, and runs on Android 10.

The big point of difference between the S20 and S20+ – besides the increased size – is the enhanced rear camera system. While the S20+ includes the same 10-megapixel front-facing camera as the S20, in back you’ll find four lenses: a 12-megapixel wide-angle camera, a 64-megapixel telephoto shooter with 3x optical zoom and 30x Super Resolution Zoom, a 12-megapixel ultra-wide lens, and a DepthVision sensor.

The S20+ also includes a 4,500mAh battery with Power Share and 25W charging. Essentially, it’s a next-step version of the entry-level S20, and is available in Cosmic Black, Cosmic Grey, and Cloud Blue variants.

As with the S20, you’ll also be able to buy a 5G version of the S20+ from participating telcos and retailers, or stick with the cheaper 4G LTE-only model.

The S20 Ultra will also offer plenty of upgraded camera features, including 8K video recording, new selfie modes, and Pro Video.

Battery-wise, expect a massive 5,000mAh of capacity, along with 45W charging and the now-standard Power Share feature. As with the S20 and S20+, the Ultra also features an Octa-Core processor, runs Android 10 with One UI 2.0, and offers IP68 dust and water protection.

The Ultra will be available in 128GB and 512GB storage sizes – both of which also include microSD storage up to 1TB – features 16GB of RAM. You’ll be able to pick the 5G-capable Ultra in either Cosmic Black and Cosmic Grey colourways.
