Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 unveiled

Get ready to ‘flip’ over Samsung’s latest foldable smartphones, the stylish and feature-packed Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 series.

The premium new devices each offer a slimmed-down design, boosted internals and powerful AI capabilities. Both the Fold and Flip will be available to pre-order in Australia from July 11, so read on for all the details on Samsung’s 2024 foldables.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6: specs and features

Samsung’s hero folding phone is the Galaxy Z Fold 6, which offers serious productivity features and S-Pen stylus compatibility. The Z Fold 6 builds on the high-end features of last year’s Galaxy Fold 5, with a continued focus on AI — including enhanced photography, translation, and note-taking features.

The Fold 6 includes a massive 7.6-inch Infinity Flex screen when unfolded (with up to 2,600 nits of brightness) and a 6.3-inch cover screen. Both displays come with a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate, which offers fast scrolling, gaming and media use when open or closed. The phone’s design includes a stronger centre fold and tougher main screen, made from durable Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2.

Under the hood, the Galaxy Fold 6 packs a powerful Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Mobile Platform for Galaxy, providing tough processing power and an advanced cooling system for heavy-duty usage. The Snapdragon processer is designed to work with Samsung AI, making the most of the Fold’s new features and Ray Tracing-supported graphics. The Fold is also ready for all-day usage thanks to its 4,400mAh battery capacity, which is compatible with 25W fast charging, fast wireless charging and PowerShare between eligible devices.

If photography and content creation is your passion, the Fold 6 includes a triple rear-camera system with a 50-megapixel wide-angle, 12-megapixel ultra-wide and 10-megapixel telephoto cameras. This lineup offers features such as 30x space zoom (comprised of 3x optical zoom and 10x digital zoom) and AI-powered editing and processing. Samsung’s new Portrait Studio allows users to transform and enhance portrait pics, while Photo Assist offers professional on-device editing options. The Fold 6 also includes a 10-megapixel front cover camera, and a 4-megapixel camera underneath the display.

Samsung is heavily promoting its upgraded AI for both the Fold 6 and Flip 6, but the technology is especially useful for buyers who want time-saving productivity and communications features. Some of the Fold 6’s AI tools include:

• Note Assist: Easy note-taking, including translation, summaries, formatting and transcribing of voice recordings
• Composer: Generates text based on simple keywords for emails, social media and messages
• Sketch to Image: Generate AI-generated images and additions on existing photos with a quick sketch
• Circle to Search: Circle, highlight or tap on the screen to offer instant search results in images and videos
• Interpreter: Includes a conversation mode so both parties can view real-time translations on the main and cover screens
• Live Translate: Directly translate voice calls on your phone in real time

As with other premium Samsung phones, the Fold is protected by Samsung Knox, which offers multi-layer security and end-to-end data encryption. Both the Fold and Flip come with seven generations of Android OS upgrades and seven years of security updates — meaning you can hold on to your phone for longer without compromising on software or safety.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 is available in 256GB, 512GB and 1TB storage sizes, with Silver Shadow, Pink and Navy colour options (plus Crafted Black and White variants from the Samsung online store). Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6: specs and features

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip range is traditionally the ‘lite’ offsider to the Fold. Despite the smaller size, this year’s Flip packs the same Samsung AI and Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor as the Fold 6, giving users a lightning-fast performance even when multitasking.

The Flip 6 features a clamshell ‘flip’ design with an improved hinge, Armor Aluminium and Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2. The main Infinity Flex screen measures in at 6.7 inches and includes a fast 120Hz adaptive refresh rate; in comparison, the cover screen is 3.4 inches with a 60Hz refresh rate. These measurements are smaller than both displays on the recently-launched Motorola Razr 50 Ultra, another flip device with a big battery and Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor.

The Flip’s screen sizes haven’t changed since 2023, but Samsung has added some notable upgrades this year, including a bigger battery, more RAM, a bigger ultra-wide camera and the inclusion of a vapour chamber to prevent overheating. That bigger battery is now 4,000mAh, up from 3,700mAh in the Flip 5. RAM has been boosted from 8GB to 12GB, and the Flip 6’s vapour chamber is the first-ever in a Samsung Flip smartphone.

The Flip 6’s dual rear-camera system includes a 50-megapixel wide and 12-megapixel ultra-wide pairing, with the new 50-megapixel sensor supporting up to 10x zoom thanks to AI. Users can take advantage of the Flip’s clamshell design through the FlexCam option, which lets you take photos hands-free and even offers automatic zoom. Improved night photography allows for crisper pics in darker conditions, and the Flip also offers better social media integration, such as taking enhanced pictures from within the Instagram app.

As with the Fold 6, the Flip uses AI upgrades to enhance the user experience; for example, Galaxy AI now allows more widgets, personalisation and notifications to be displayed through the FlexWindow cover screen. One cute addition is Photo Ambient, which offers real-time wallpaper changes based on the time and weather conditions.

The Galaxy Z Flip 6 comes with 5G connectivity, Android 14 OS, an IPX8 water resistance rating and Samsung Knox security. Both the Flip and Fold are also dual SIM capable and can be used with eSIMs from participating telcos.
