How to watch House of the Dragon season 2

The wait is finally (almost) over for fans of House of the Dragon, with season 2 set to premiere on June 17.

Season 1 of the Game of Thrones prequel ended with a bang, promising bloody war and a fight for the Iron Throne as the House of Targaryen struggles to hold onto power.

It’s been a long wait between seasons for fans of the series – more than 18 months – and HBO Max only began drip-feeding information about the follow up in recent weeks.

Aside from graphic battle scenes and endless backstabbing, season 2 also delivers a slew of new characters, including five new dragons after fans complained about a serious lack of dragon action in season 1.

HBO Max released the trailer for House of the Dragon season 2 in May. Predictably, it includes plenty of dragons, sword fights and long blond hair.

Returning and new cast members

Matt Smith and Emma D’Arcy are returning this season as the troubled Daemon and Rhaenyra Targaryen, struggling to maintain control over the Seven Kingdoms. Also making a comeback for season 2 are Eve Best as Princess Rhaenys of Targaryen, Steve Toussaint as Lord Corlys Valaryon, Fabien Frankel as Ser Criston Cole, Ewan Mitchell as Aemond Targaryen, Tom Glynn-Carney as Aegon Targaryen, Sonoya Mizuno as Mysaria and Rhys Ifans as Ser Otto Hightower.

Season 2 also includes new cast members Abubakar Salim as Alyn of Hull, Gayle Rankin as Alys Rivers, Freddie Fox as Ser Gwayne Hightower and plenty more complex characters to fuel the drama in Westeros.

House of the Dragon season 1 summary

The first season of House of the Dragon is set about 200 years before Game of Thrones. It focuses on the reign of King Viserys I Targaryen and the events leading to the Targaryen civil war, known as the Dance of the Dragons.

The season begins with King Viserys choosing his daughter Rhaenyra as his heir, defying tradition and sparking controversy.

The plot thickens when Viserys marries Alicent Hightower, who bears him a son, Aegon II, challenging Rhaenyra’s claim. The court becomes divided, with factions supporting either Rhaenyra or Aegon. Tensions escalate as Prince Daemon Targaryen, Viserys’ rebellious brother, marries Rhaenyra, further complicating the line of succession.

The season ends on a cliffhanger with the death of Prince Lucerys Velaryon, Rhaenyra’s son, at the hands of Aemond Targaryen, Alicent’s son, setting the stage for the inevitable Targaryen civil war.
