Aussie Broadband raises plan prices for mobile customers

Yet another popular Australian telco has quietly increased the price of its SIM-only phone plans — meaning impacted customers will now pay up to $60 more each year for their mobile service.

Aussie Broadband has revised pricing on its range of postpaid mobile plans, with selected products receiving a $5 per month price hike. The price changes impact all of Aussie Broadband’s 5G-ready plans, as well its 30GB, 4G-only option.

Aussie Broadband’s price increases are live now, and will apply to new and existing customers on the affected plans. Here’s what you’ll pay for each plan going forward.

Aussie Broadband 4G mobile plan prices:

• Basic Pack: $15 per month for 3GB of data
• Stay Connected: $20 per month for 10GB of data
• Aussie Saver: $35 per month for 30GB of data (was $30)
• Max Value: $40 per month for 40GB of data
• Data Wise: $55 per month for 60GB of data (was $50)

Aussie Broadband 5G mobile plan prices:

• Fast Track: $50 per month for 30GB of data (was $45)
• Tech First: $65 per month for 80GB of data (was $60)
• Future Now: $75 per month for 220GB of data (was $70)

All plans include unlimited standard national talk and text in Australia, no lock-in contract, and coverage on Optus’ 4G and 5G mobile networks. Selected plans also include international call credit: you’ll get $50 per month on the Max Value, Fast Track, and Data Wise plans, $200 monthly on the Tech First plan, and $500 on the premium Future Now plan.

Aussie Broadband has advised that customers on the previously-available $50/100GB plan will be transitioned on to the new $75 Future Now plan; however, they will be offered a $15 discount for their first 12 months, bringing the price down to $60 per month.

An Aussie Broadband spokesperson told Canstar Blue that this is the first time the telco’s mobile plan prices have been changed since launch, and wasn’t a decision made lightly.

“Unfortunately, the increased operational costs of the current economic environment means we can no longer fully absorb the impact of some of plans,” the spokesperson said.

“While we were not able to fully absorb existing prices any further, the changes have been made as to minimise the impact on as many customers as possible. The plan changes will affect less than 20 percent of Aussie Broadband’s mobile user base. But should the new plans not meet customers’ requirements, users can update their plan preferences as required through the MyAussie app, web portal or over the phone with one of our Aussie staffers.”

How do Aussie Broadband’s new prices compare?

Aussie Broadband joins a growing list of telcos who have recently tweaked mobile plan pricing. Telstra, Boost Mobile, Belong and Moose Mobile have all revamped their SIM-only prices since June; however, most of these price changes also include increased data each month.

In comparison, Aussie Broadband’s plan inclusions remain unchanged. You’ll still get the same number of gigabytes to use each month, as well as the same international call credit on selected plans — the only difference being you’ll pay an extra $5.

If you’re currently with Aussie Broadband for your mobile plan, or just curious as to how the telco’s options stack up, you can find cheaper deals by shopping around. For example, Aussie Broadband’s 30GB Aussie Saver plan is now $35 per month, but you can find similar or higher data inclusions for $30 or less from Moose Mobile, Dodo, Circles.Life, Belong, AGL and Tangerine.

If you’re looking at 5G-ready plans, Aussie Broadband’s options now begin at $45 per month for the 30GB Fast Track plan. But you can find competitive 5G-enabled alternatives from Belong (40GB for $35 per month), AGL (40GB for $40 monthly), and Southern Phone (also 40GB for $40). If you need big data, Belong is also offering 100GB for $45 each month, AGL’s $50 plan includes 100GB, and Southern Phone’s $50 SIM also comes with 100GB of data.

While all of the above providers sell postpaid SIMs, there’s also some hot 5G offers available in the prepaid space: Amaysim’s $40 plan includes 80GB of data, and ALDI Mobile’s $55 per month plan comes with 120GB. So for customers on the hunt for more data for their dollars, it can pay to shop around.

Aussie Broadband NBN and mobile plans bundles: save up to $300 per year

If you’re keen to stick with Aussie Broadband, but want a way to cut your bills, the telco now offers a small range of NBN and mobile plan bundles, which can save you up to $25 per month (that’s $300 each year!). However, these products are only available on NBN/20 and NBN 250 speed tiers, and only with selected mobile plans — unfortunately, you can’t mix and match your choice of NBN plan and SIM.

Aussie Broadband isn’t the only big telco giving customers discounts for bundling NBN and mobile plans. For example, Vodafone customers can save by bundling two or more plans under one account: you’ll get a 5% discount for two plans, 10% off for three plans, 15% off for four plans, and 20% off for five or more.
