Expert Guide: Kogan Energy Review and Ratings

Fact Checked Fact Checked

It’s not a far stretch to assume you’ve heard of Kogan, the online retail giant selling everything from televisions to life insurance, and in no great surprise to anyone, it’s now slinging energy plans. What might be a bit of a shock is that this is all happening in partnership with established energy provider, Powershop.

“Flip the switch for amazing value,” the provider prompts on its website, repeatedly using the phrase “amazing” in description of its pricing. With big claims like that, Kogan Energy could be set to take a jab at the competition in the energy space – but only if those claims are true. Are they? Find out below.

Kogan Energy Plans

Kogan Energy currently advertises three market offers in each state it services. These are:

  • Kogan Energy with Free First: This is a variable rate product on an ongoing benefit period with no exit fees. In addition to competitive usage and supply rates, this plan awards bill-payers with a complimentary 12 month membership to First which offers specialty discounts and rewards to Kogan shoppers. To be eligible for this plan, customers can not be already be a First member. This offer is available to those in New South Wales, South East Queensland, South Australia and Victoria.
  • Kogan Energy for Current First Members: This product is similar to the one mentioned above, however, with this plan customers must already be a First member. As such, this plan removed the complimentary membership and instead credits customers with a one-off $99 bill credit on their first bill.
  • Basic: This plan simply matches the Reference Price in each area, not offering any discounts. It comes with no exit fees or lock-in contract.

Kogan Energy operates in partnership with Powershop. What this means is that rather than owning its own retail license, Kogan Energy has partnered with Powershop to provide energy to Aussies. So, essentially, Kogan takes care of the marketing and Powershop takes care of the rest, or as referenced in its Ts and Cs, “Powershop Australia Pty Ltd who sells energy to you under the name Kogan Energy at your premises”. Its plan comes with no lock-in contract or exit fees, however, customers will need to pay by direct debit on a monthly billing cycle.

Direct debit payment is also required for these offers, with the only real difference being that instead of monthly payments, you’ll receive your bill every two months.

Should I switch to Kogan Energy?

Bargain hunters everywhere perked up at the news of Kogan selling electricity – after all, how could a retailer known for low prices and good discounts give you a bad deal on your power?

And while discounts are nowhere to be seen with this retailer, it seems to lend itself to a positive outcome, rather than a negative. And with Powershop handling the operational side of things, it seems as though you’ll get good rates and reliability to boot. But is it the cheapest deal in town? You’ll have to compare prices and providers in your area via the links below to find out.
